They’ve sent me 2 items - what shall I do?

I’ve posted in AIBU as I’d like a vote but it’s more of a wwyd.

I ordered a fairly expensive item of clothing for my dc from a well known retailer. It’s arrived and they have sent me 2 identical items.

The weird thing is that the invoice has 2 of the item listed on it but with each one at half of the price! So it looks like I’ve ordered 2 at half price, as opposed to just being sent 2 by accident.

I worried for a moment that I’d accidentally ordered 2 but I checked on the website and the item is still full price and I only paid the one full amount.

I tried to ring customer services but their phone lines no longer exist and it’s email contact only. I haven’t emailed yet.

Do I
a) keep both and give the other one to my niece (YABU)
Or
b) email and send one back (YANBU)?

It says 2 on the delivery note. Yours to keep!

Palavah · 10/09/2021 10:52

Email and ask them what they want you to do.

You know full well you shouldn't just keep the second item without attempting to contact them.

CeceJoyce · 10/09/2021 10:52

If it’s on the invoice as two items then you’re doing nothing wrong. Maybe there was a one off sale the day you ordered?

TonkinLenkicks · 10/09/2021 10:53

Bank error in your favour I believe Grin

devildeepbluesea · 10/09/2021 10:53

I know of literally no one who would query this.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 10/09/2021 10:56

List the second on on eBay?

AlvinSimonTheo · 10/09/2021 11:02

Happened to me. Spares in the Christmas box Wink

I once ordered a case of wine to be delivered to my school address in December. A couple of days before the end of term it hadn't arrived but when I phoned them they said it had been delivered but to the wrong address and they would courier one to me at home which did arrive. When I returned to work in January there was a case of wine waiting, when I phoned again they told me to hang onto it, it was easier for them than collecting it! A few days later I got a call at home apologising for the misdelivery before Christmas and they would be sending one out that day! When I explained the saga they thought it was one department not talking to another. No, I didn't get the third case.

This has happened to me before. I'd email and ask them what they want you to do. They might be nice and say you can just keep the extra item!

PinkCheetah · 10/09/2021 11:26

Happened to me. I kept silent and kept it. No one came after me so...

Emelene · 10/09/2021 11:28

I’d email. When similar has happened to me, they let me keep it and then I didn’t feel guilty! Grin

Peanutsandchilli · 10/09/2021 11:43

If you've paid full price and they've sent you two at half price then you've paid for both of them, so I'd sell one on.

NoSquirrels · 10/09/2021 11:53

I’ve voted YABU but mainly because if you email it’s pretty likely they’ll tell you to keep it, so you get the warm glow of doing the right thing as well as the bonus item.

If they don’t, it’s because they’re small enough that every sale at the correct margin counts, so then you can have the warm glow of doing the right thing, just minus the extra bonus item.

HailAdrian · 10/09/2021 11:57

Just keep it.

OchreBlue · 10/09/2021 11:57

This has happened to me quite a few times and I've got an over-active conscience and always let them know. I've always been told I can keep the spare item, every time, but I would always tell them, then there's no guilt when you use it either.

HailAdrian · 10/09/2021 11:58

OP has attempted to sooo job done.

romdowa · 10/09/2021 12:04

Honestly, just keep it. Once Christmas I ordered my father a book. It was delivered and the next day I got an email from the retailer saying that the book was out of stock and they would be refunding me. So I rang them and explained the situation and it was like I was speaking a different language, they couldn't understand what I was on about , then when I finally got them to understand they couldn't do anything about it and didn't seem to care either. I hung up feeling pretty stupid for even trying to do the right thing.
