Squinty eyes

MaskingForIt · 09/09/2021 19:39

At work, Fred has been put on reduced duties due to a problem with his eyes, whereby the light does not form a point*.

Without googling/looking in a dictionary, which is these is correct?

YABU - Fred has astigmatism.

YANBU - Fred has a stigmatism.

FWIW I know what it is due to having it myself, but there was debate at work as to which is correct. I am curious as to what the wider public’s knowledge is like.

*approximately, IANAO

Yabu

I have an astigmatism in both eyes. It wouldn’t result in me having reduced duties.

bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 09/09/2021 19:44

@NotAnotherBloodyNameChange same here...

Could it be, that in fact Fred doesn't have 'Squinty Eye' at all but, he is intensely studying what you're wearing?

It is highly likely that you do a different job to Fred.

Fred is known for being a “ladies man” but this has been confirmed by an optician.

Why would him being a ladies man need to be confirmed by an optician?

🤣 It’s part of their “widening participation” programme, and their drive to increase diversity.

Are you sure it's astigmatism and not strabismus (correct name for a squint and can cause double vision)

YukoandHiro · 09/09/2021 20:03

If Fred has a squint he has strabismus. He may also have an astigmatism. They are different things

Janaih · 09/09/2021 20:04

I used to have a squint, it wasn't this fun Grin

Cabbagepie · 09/09/2021 20:05

I have astigmatism in both eyes and do not have 'squinty eyes'

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 09/09/2021 20:10

the term is astigmatism, no such thing as a stigmatism.

pretty sure a decent accurately prescribed pair of specs will help more than light duties.

DroopyClematis · 09/09/2021 20:11

I also have astigmatism in both eyes. It's never affected my ability to work.
I'm not sure about squints though.

bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 09/09/2021 20:13

Do you mean stigmata and he's on light duties while the church looks into it? 🤔

RickJames · 09/09/2021 20:18

@bluetoothroboticgrapefruit

That's what I was wondering. If so, touch his robes, prostrate yourself and do some praying. You might get that hoped for promotion or at least some cool advantages in the afterlife.

wishing3 · 09/09/2021 20:20

Astigmatism

MaskingForIt · 09/09/2021 20:20

”pretty sure a decent accurately prescribed pair of specs will help more than light duties.”

I see what you did there 🤓

Yes! That is exactly what I thought when I read the email saying that “Due to Fred being diagnosed with a stigmatism he will no longer be doing...”

On querying, I was disappointed to learn that Fred just needed glasses and wasn’t, in fact, the Second Coming.
