To be upset by this?

Started a new job on Monday. This is a new sector for me but I have held the same role in a different sector for 15 years. In my old sector you do A, B and a bit of C but in this new sector it's very little A, a bit of B but mostly C. I have specifically been employed though to do A, B and scale back the amount of time on C and my new team are aware of this.

Following me?

Anyway, number 2 in my department came to see me today (I am their manager) and said in not so many words that they feel my skills don't match the job that needs to be done and they have been losing sleep about the impact this will have!

So, on my third day of a new role I get told that the people in my department think Im crap because I have a little bit less experience in an area we are scaling back on anyway!

I have literally no idea how to play this now! I've been stewing on it all day and I'm so upset! Who does that to someone on their 3rd day?!!

Aibu for being upset? And what the hell do I do now?!

Tell them what you've been hired to do and that you'll explain the strategic direction as soon as you've developed it. Then thank them for their feedback and send them on their way...done!

Well, I'd try to stop caring so much what this person thinks tbh.

Phrases like, "I'm confident the manager who employed me knew what they were doing." Maybe suggest they focus on their own role and speak to their GP if they feel their anxiety is becoming a problem? If they bring it up again then be clear that it isnt appropriate for them to be commenting on your skills and ask them to refrain.

The reality is that there is always a little bit of time while you get to grips with a new role. It is nothing to worry about.

Sounds like that person applied for your job and didn't get it. Watch your back.

Thank you for your replies. I just sort of stood there like a mug and took it! I'm so cross with myself!

Right, any more nonsense and I'll raise it with senior management!
