We have had awful issues recently with neighbours & resorted to cctv as extra security... When this went up they called the police as they said it was pointing on their property... Police were satisfied when they called that all was within our boundary... Anyhow cctv has gone up out the front & us just covering our little front garden but they have put two big mattresses their side of the fence as a "screen" from the camera that isn't in their direction 😩 it looks awful what can we do? I really dont want the police coming twice in one week & we're no longer talking to them...

Unfortunately unless you have evidence of rats the council may not have powers under Environmental Health legislation to request their removal. If your neighbourhood is generally quite tidy you might have some recourse under section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act.
Mattresses are generally classified as inert waste, however every council is different and it would be worth checking with your environmental Health team to see whether they would help under Prevention of Damage from Pests Act, if not you know you can approach planning.

@MrsRobbieHart

Who the hell has two spare mattresses to use as a camera shield? Confused

GrinYou do wonder what they're sleeping on....

MrsRobbieHart · 08/09/2021 21:36

I admire their commitment to pettiness! Grin

StoneofDestiny · 08/09/2021 21:46

Ignore - it will bother them more. However if it's in a road that is pretty public I imagine someone will report them for littering. They will become a home for vermin soon too I imagine. Report the littering anonymously.

Chloemol · 08/09/2021 21:50

Don’t do anything, leave them to get wet mattresses.

Who owns the fence? If it’s you I think you can ask them to remove it or advise they will be responsible for any damage. If joint I would refuse to do contribute

Personally I think they are idiots. I gave cctv and the neighbours are more than happy it covers their driveway as it saves them getting cctv!

gah2teenagers · 08/09/2021 21:55

I’d arrange a bulky waste collection from the council . It would be worth it for the laugh. Ours charges £30. Just pretend you are them.

Oh I like this! It would be 17.50 where I live.
DogsandCatsB4u · 08/09/2021 23:45

Ignore I hate one of my neighbours too and they try everything to get my attention. I use to bite now I just realise they are jobless jealous twats with nothing better to do.

RazorSharp · 09/09/2021 04:10

Ignore them, but always maintain a happy demeanour when they're about. Don't let them know they wind you up!

littlefireseverywhere · 09/09/2021 04:40

I’d go with the bulky waste collection a wonderful idea!

burritofan · 09/09/2021 04:58

Our council collects mattresses for free!

And you don’t have to prove you’re the tenant, just put the address and leave the mattress outside. Half the job is already done…

Mothership4two · 09/09/2021 05:48

It's on their property, not a lot you can do. I'm sure police would be thrilled to be called out again for that! Maybe they are planning to install some sort of proper screen and this is just for the meantime?

With people like that it is best to not engage as much as possible.

Generally, in England, the boundary on the left hand side of the garden (as you look at house) is your responsibility if you are the home owner. But, like I said, kind of irrelevant as items are on their property.

We have also got a petty neighbour, who we try not to get involved with - fortunately at bottom of garden and not to one side of us. When we moved some old sheds and, saw how decrepit the fence was, we replaced it (thinking it was ours) and he came out and ranted at my dh that it was his fence. dh said, oh well would you like to pay towards it then? He stomped off grumbling. Hmm

stayathomer · 09/09/2021 05:57

Time to move
Based on the antisocial behaviour on top of your crappy neighbours I'm sorry but I'd agree

SoloISland · 09/09/2021 06:25

Ignoring them and all they do will drive them crazy. Ignore them. They WANT you to involve so they can escalate and continue the conflict.

I have been being harassed here for years. Eejit of a man and I ignore all he does. Drives him insane but like you I did once involve the Gardaí and that is a very real curb .. nasty man. HIS choice is this not mine.

Certainly not worth moving house over.

SoloISland · 09/09/2021 06:54

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend

Report then to the council for having waste in their garden.
Nah; they would love that and know they had irked you which was their intention. Just ignore it all and get on with your life. Sooner or later they will either overstep the mark and lay themselves open to real trouble, or find another hobby. Smile and whistle or sing as you go .
Travelledtheworld · 09/09/2021 06:58

How do you know the matresses haven't been put out for bulky waste collection ?

lannistunut · 09/09/2021 07:05

Do you rent or own, and do they rent or own?

If you rent, move.
If they rent, report to their landlord.
If you both own, ignore.

Mamamamasaurus · 10/09/2021 12:31

Ahhhh, life really is simple when someone puts it like this ^

🙄

CSIblonde · 10/09/2021 13:10

Where I live they'd get drunks on the way home using the mattreses as urinals or somewhere to have a few more cans! I'd move. They're looking for a reaction/ to escalate things & that never ends well.

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 10/09/2021 13:21

Urgh. I feel sorry for you OP

I liked the sound of catnip and cress seeds though lol
