NC just for outing potential.

I've been trying to get some landscaping done for ages. I say landscaping, it's actually a tiny patio, replacement fencing and gate, then some work on the equally tiny front garden. About 2k/4 days worth. I have contacted about 8 tradesmen/small companies. Two never answered the messages i left. One came out and gave a ridiculous quote then refused to break it down itemised. One says he'd quote after coming round but didn't. Another quoted and we asked to book but he never replied. (They are all busy right now but we agreed work would start in autumn. They came to view earlier this summer).

After a while i contacted some more people though i was running out of recommended local options (all of the above came recommended). Two guys came out quite promptly and were very nice, informative, we had a joke about the previous insane quote etc. They itemised everything on the spot and calculated the ballpark cost which was great. We discussed different materials and options in a fair amount of detail. We spoke about an October start date. This was near the end of July.

I messaged afterwards to say thanks for coming and being so informative and we'd like to book in. Guy said great, will get back to confirm. A couple of days later I decided a wall at the front would work best in place of a fence, i messaged this and asked if that was ok. He asked me to double check measurements and send them over just so he could amend the quote, a wall would be an extra day's work which i said was fine. After that i heard nothing. Over the past few weeks i gently prodded once, heard nothing again, so called instead, the guy apologised, went over what we'd said before and said he'd send the quote via email that evening. He messaged me an hour later to say he was doing it and asked me to link to the pavers i wanted, which I did. He said he'd get the email sent over. It never arrived. After a few days i messaged to check he had the right email. No response. No email in spam folder or anything. So i waited. Two weeks. Last week I left a voicemail. Again no response.

It's a shame as they seemed really friendly and competent, good work/reviews etc. But AIBU to try and find someone else now (again?) if there's anyone even left, haha. I might give this guy one last call before i do. FYI he is working and posting on his social media and updating the company Facebook. PS I try very hard to not be an asshole, I'm polite and straightforward and the job isn't too big or too small IMO with reasonable/normal requests, so I'm pretty stressed that no one wants to bother! I know they all have a lot of work on so they can turn anything down, but i don't even mind if it gets done next year as long as it is booked! I am exhausted mentally by chasing people up and doing all the admin so i really didn't want to have to explain the job AGAIN.

Anyone else have this happen?

Keep looking.
It's become a thing now with landscapers/ trades.
Don't take it personally.

BritInUS1 · 07/09/2021 06:25

It's definitely not you, we have had a nightmare since getting back to the US getting trades

I think there is just so much work they are overwhelmed

ItsSnowJokes · 07/09/2021 06:31

Nope not you. Trades (most of them) are an absolute nightmare at the moment. We are waiting for a patio to be installed. They said it would be 6 weeks ish. That was 7 weeks ago, we called last week and it's looking like the end of September now (if they turn up!) We have had trades not turn up to quote, turn up and then not send a quote etc....... I think everyone is having work done, shortages of materials etc.. is playing its part but also that trades can be very disorganised.

When everything does calm down I do wonder if trades will be very quiet as everyone has had so much work done surely there can't be much more to get done! Also when people can start to go on holidays properly again are they going to spend the money on that instead of their homes? Maybe next year trades will be really quiet who knows.

whiteroseredrose · 07/09/2021 06:32

It is very hard at the moment even for bigger jobs.

We had a quote from someone last October to have our garden patios done. He has done work for my mum so we had a sort of connection.

We were told April initially, then June but the work was finally done in August!

They have to work around the weather and were here 8am to 7pm some days, then went home to do paperwork... which is why it took weeks to get the quote initially and why we never got a sketch.

They really are very busy.

the80sweregreat · 07/09/2021 06:34

I've been trying to get a quote for a new loo to be fitted. I've given up now as plumbers are in demand and can pick and choose. They don't want to know about the smaller jobs like this would be.
Luckily the old one isn't in bad condition, just very old!

pleasesendthequoteffs · 07/09/2021 06:38

Yes, it's fair that they're busy. Just wish they could drop me a line to say so, i don't mind being turned down just hate being on the hook! I will probably contact other people and maybe have a last resort at calling this guy. It's been weird because he was so thorough and seemed keen. If it's just a case of him forgetting his emails/voice mails i don't mind but i do need a response at some point!

4 days ??? That's more like four weeks of work. You would be surprised how long it takes a good trade to do a High quality job.

How much was the quote you considered ridiculous?
So you want:
A new patio
New fence
New brick garden wall.

Fuel and materials have rocked up in price too, plus everyone is finding it hard to employ anyone at the moment (why people don't want a job that need one I'll never know). That's all going to add to the expensive quotes.

Rangoon · 07/09/2021 06:48

We had some ridiculous quotes for removing our fireplace - it was out of character, off to one side and smoked the room out on occasion and we had central heating. Eventually we had the flu removed professionally and my poor husband had to slegdehammer out the hearth and remaining bits of chimney breast, put up new gib board, plaster the wall, paint the wall and install and stain new skirting board. We were absolutely prepared to pay a tradesman to do it but nobody was interested in the job.

LongTimeMammaBear · 07/09/2021 08:14

Yes. We had just about same scenario for work in the garden. Wa very happy to wait months, just wanted to book in. Never got anywhere. We’re having the same thing for handymen. It is just insane.

thetesdybears · 07/09/2021 08:18

It seems that everyone has been doing the garden up this year. No doubt spending the holiday money they wld usually spend going abroad.

They are maybe just really busy still dealing with quotes etc from gardens that are being done before yours. However it's bad form isn't it. Even if they just messaged bk the figure and said I'll get a quote emailed over when I have a chance.

reluctantbrit · 07/09/2021 08:24

We had this beginning of the year. Finally booked mid March for work starting end of September. Some others were already fully booked for the whole year then.

I didn't mind, at least we got a company who is rated good with local people.

I think it is not unreasonable to get a breakdown of the quote, we had a larger than anticipated quote and they were more than happy to break it down and explain the why.

But not getting any feedback or answering calls is just plain rude.

Mantlemoose · 07/09/2021 08:27

2 weeks work there not 4 days. To lay a patio you need to dig out, level out, sand, whacked, cut, lay, edge, point. Fence posts go in one day, remaining fence next day, wall need found dug etc. Price in Scotland c£6k if small.

pleasesendthequoteffs · 08/09/2021 07:45

I forgot to mention the fence won't be done yet. So quote was for stone wall at front. The wall is already there, just needs height adding by 50cm. Wall is 1m length. Patio is already there but needs replacing, is 3mx2m.
