To ask my ex for more money towards kids clubs?

My ex pays £25/child per week.
One of my kids wants to start a new riding club which is going to be £50/cm
My other child is also keen so may start too.
Aibu to ask ex for a contribution towards this or is his payments meant to cover things like this too?

You can ask.

Of course you should ask. Is he generally reasonable? You can't force him to pay but no harm in asking.

Depends if he/you can afford it. Sounds a lot of money!

You can ask but legally he doesn’t have to, so he can say no. No harm in asking though.

Caterinasballerinas · 06/09/2021 21:22

Yes I think you should ask, something along the lines of, ‘DC wants to do the riding hobby, it’s a new expense and could you have a chat about whether the two of you as co-parents can afford to cover it and want to for this hobby over anything else?’ This suggests you are open to an opinion but it’s over which hobby they should do, not over whether to just do it at all. Eg he might have a strong opinion that they should do swimming over anything else and you are suggesting you are open to that idea?

Do you know how much he earns abs have you checked with the CMS calculator that he's paying correctly!

No unfortunately, he's also reduced payments in the last few months but I've no way of checking his income I think it's in the region of £30k

Well if you can talk to him and explain the reason he might agree. You never know if you don't ask x

My ex earns around £19000 and pays £178 per month for 1 DC with no regular overnights. Go to the CMS and pay the £20 for them to calculate the amount he should contribute. They then recalculate this (with no fee, once a year on the application anniversary). That then tells you and him the minimum he should contribute, anything on top of this for uniform or clubs is from his own 'generosity'.
