Is it possible for narcolepsy (W/out cataplexy) symptoms to be intermittent or do they need to be constant? My GP suspects I might have narcolepsy but I am waiting for an appointment with a sleep specialist so haven’t been formally diagnosed yet (and my appointment is in June next year, thanks to the long NHS waiting lists). When I first went to my doctor about my symptoms they were happening about five nights a week (hypnagogic hallucinations, dreaming from the minute I fell asleep, long vivid dreams and nightmares, sleep paralysis, all happening I n one night, almost every single night) with excessive sleepiness and sleep attacks the day following the bad nights. In the last few months, however, they have trailed off to just happening every so often randomly. I might have mild hallucinations one night then sleep normally for a week then have one episode of sleep paralysis then sleep normally for another week or so, and so on. During this time I still have a background level of tiredness during the day and still nap but don’t have sleep attacks. Could this still be narcolepsy? Is it something that can go through flare ups and remissions like this or would it be almost constant every night like it was in the beginning (for about two years before I finally saw a doctor about it). I am thoroughly confused and just want to know what’s wrong with me. I had just got used to thinking maybe I had narcolepsy and looking forward to getting my diagnosis confirmed so I could go on medication, not now not knowing where I stand and whether I am better or if it could come back at any moment. Can anyone share their experience of whether narcolepsy an be intermittent and come and go in flare ups?
