I wonder if I should have said something?

I was in town with dh and the dc, we sat outside at a bar for a drink and dh went inside to the bar.

There was a man next to us sitting alone having a pint and he asked me to watch his bag while he went to the bar. I just said yeah sure and didn't think much of it.

The next thing two other men came along to the table where the man alone had been sitting. They were talking to the waitress and I heard her say "oh someone is sitting there" presumably because there was a rucksack on the seat. One of them said something back but they seemed to just sit down anyway. I was a bit concerned about the rucksack, but at this point I wasn't even sure whether it was the same guy and he'd returned with a friend or whether they were some friends meeting him.

Next, the man came back to his table and a bit of an argument broke out between the men over them nicking his table because he asked them to move and they refused and called him rude. They wanted to share the table they were very pushy.

Original man then sat there looking mighty pissed off having returned with another pint and now having to share his table.

I felt quite sorry for him and wished I'd spoke up as I suppose he'd only left his bag there to hold his table.

Well you agreed to watching his bag so yes you should have politely said that the seat was taken?

Looubylou · 04/09/2021 22:21

No, it's not your job to guard his table, and put yourself in difficult situations.

Freddiefox · 04/09/2021 22:23

Wouldn’t have hurt to mention it.

Elieza · 04/09/2021 22:26

Honestly I don’t think it would have helped as the two are pushy cheeky feckers and disrespected the waitress so you chiming in prob wouldn’t have made any difference.

However I prob would have shouted over ‘sorry mate there a dude sitting there he’s just at the toilet’.

There are arseholes everywhere. Any money the blokes tried to get the single guy to move to a smaller table or something and he was having none of it as he was there first.

Wait staff are taking some power of abuse these days from bolshy angry customers. It’s bang out of order.

HungryHippo11 · 04/09/2021 22:29

They didn't listen to the waiting staff, why would they listen to you? They were clearly just rude people, I wouldn't think too much more about it.

Amazes me when people ask a complete stranger to look after their bag or whatever

PumpkinKlNG · 04/09/2021 22:42

I do think it’s weird that you agreed to look after his bag then didn’t say anything 😕
