Anyone know about cars? What car would you choose between these 2 cars?1

I am torn between the Audi A3 S line 2018 (68) (so old version)

Or the

New shape Golf - entry level 2020 (70)

The Audi s a higher level than the Golf but the Golf is newer. The Audi looks nicer and is more comfortable but is the old shape where as the Golf is new shape but basic level.

Which would you choose and why?

I’m a big fan of Golfs but the entry level will be VERY basic. The s line A3 will be a bit nicer to drive and have more mod cons, so that would be my choice.

OhWhatAmIDoing · 02/09/2021 19:55

S Line A3 every time. Its still a nice shape even though it isn't the latest model and I'd prefer the add ons rather than a basic spec golf.

Jubaju · 02/09/2021 19:55

The Audi. Why only those cars?

CliffordMystery · 02/09/2021 19:55

I would just go with your personal preference on something like this, which seems to be the Audi. I don’t think that would be a wrong choice. Also it depends on the price and the mileage.

The Audi. Why only those cars?

Maybe because she’s looked at others and whittled it down to these two?

mancarose · 02/09/2021 20:07

From my experience the golf would be a better option, cheaper to upkeep, way more reliable, and the resell value it tonnes better than audis.

adawong · 02/09/2021 20:17

Niether .Get a skoda Octavia.

BungleandGeorge · 02/09/2021 20:21

Have you test driven both? What size engines?

DrWhoNowww · 02/09/2021 20:21

Of those two, the Audi.

A basic golf is very basic indeed.

(In reality neither as there are far better options available at that price level but up to you)

Wherearemymarbles · 02/09/2021 20:23

Which is cheaper to run? I’d probably go with the A3 though
Maybe skoda scala instead??

Woodmarsh · 02/09/2021 20:25

Neither but if I had to choose between those then the audi

ttcissoboring · 02/09/2021 20:26

Audi A3 holds its value much more and a 2020 car is going to depreciate more than 2018.

Also I list prefer a3!

Shade17 · 02/09/2021 20:34

Both score poorly for reliability, although the petrol Golf scores higher than the A3. Interestingly BMW seemed to have upped their game and are now producing decent cars again. The 1 series does very well.

Planty13 · 02/09/2021 20:41

Audi between those two

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2021 07:20

I'd also not pick either of those two but agree that base spec cars can be very basic to the extent that it will be annoying to drive and resale values are lower so could be a false economy.

The Golf could be lacking features that many regard as standard on that type of car these days such as cruise control and an easy way of connecting your phone to the stereo.

But parts and servicing for the Audi could be more expensive.

purdypuma · 03/09/2021 07:44

Out of the 2 I would pick the Audi every time due to the better spec. I think the golf being entry level would impact on potential resale value in the future as people buy VAG group cars with a certain level of expectation re spec etc.

If you're open to suggestions then have a look at the Sest Leon. Cheaper than both the other 2 options with more spec for less as standard & same size but all VAG (VW) under the bonnet. These are now holding their resale values almost as well as VW as people are now well aware they're all VW under the bonnet, same as Skoda.

Audi A3 S-Line

As PP have said the base models are very basic. The S-line will have the super comfy seats.

Serving may be more expensive if you go main dealer, but if you find a decent mechanic then the costs won’t be much more than the golf (G&S do oem parts for both).

FruityBun · 03/09/2021 08:53

Where I live the Audi every time. The Golf was rubbish on snow and ice.

DynamoKev · 03/09/2021 09:08

Errrrgh. If forced I'd have the Golf. My A3 was the worst car I have ever owned (although I agree with others the seats were comfortable - unfortunately that didn't make make up for the rest including poor reliability and rock-hard suspension). But I don't buy German (brand) cars any more.

DynamoKev · 03/09/2021 09:09

Hard to imagine why unless the Audi had 4 wheel drive since they are basically the same car.
