Hotel next to lap dancing clubs

On holiday in Greece. Hotel I booked did not specify that it is in the middle of the red light district! I emailed the hotel for certain bits of information which they also never replied to!
Also on the advert it states there are rooms with views of the Acropolis including the restaurant but it turns out they used pictures from the sister hotel! Do I have any recourse? Would like to move hotel.

Red light district - I don’t think they have to state this. Is it affecting you?

Views - so there aren’t views of Acropolis from any of the rooms, even premium rooms? That’s unaccceptable and yes, I would complain.

Sirzy · 02/09/2021 05:42

The only bit you would have a right to complain about is the lack of view if it has been misold as a result.

Who did you book through? If it was direct with the hotel then you will probably have even less comeback

araiwa · 02/09/2021 05:44

Lack of acropolis would piss me off if I chose a hotel specially so I had that view

phishy · 02/09/2021 05:46

And hotels often use images of their best/luxury rooms to advertise, but if you book a standard room, you won’t necessarily get those features.

So need more info.

BridesmaidHelp · 02/09/2021 05:59

Booked with booking.com
Definitely says duluxe room with landmark views on my booking but I have a room of a very busy noisy road!
I asked for a quiet room as well!

Having read several reviews I was definitely misled- lots of reviews about upgrades.
Also ad states use of a fitness room that is actually closed!

There are lots of reviews stating that it’s sandwiched between two lap dancing clubs so not family friendly at all! Though I have no children I prefer family friendly hotels. They definitely have a group of hotels and use the pictures from different hotels having researched
It’s all very misleading

On the view - is it possible some of the rooms (even if not your room) have a view of the acropolis? Even if it’s a side view they can still advertise it. Similarly, the restaurant view is the acropolis visible from there even if further away than expected? Advertising photos can be taken with long lens/on very clear day/of surrounding area rather than view from the property depending on how it is worded on the advert.

I don’t think you have any recourse on the lapdancing club. That’s just part and parcel of being in a touristy part of a city, and if it’s not attached to/owned by the property they wouldn’t need to list it as a “facility”. If it’s impacting on your trip It might be useful in future to do a google street view “walk” or “drive” round potential hotels before booking - we’ve done that in the past and it’s been really useful.

BridesmaidHelp · 02/09/2021 06:09

Thanks Lurker it’s not really impacting my trip at all and I supposed give it a “cool” atmosphere! I was surprised though! I think in future will definitely do the google street view thing.

I am bothered by the room as my booking summary which is essentially a summary of the room does state landmark view.

If it’s not too late into your trip (and if you would be happy to shift rooms) then there’s no harm in showing reception the advert and asking for the room as described - you will then find out whether you’ve been given a “bad” room or if it’s misleading advertising on the whole, and this would give you more recourse if you wanted to complain further to booking.com/hotel group.

Hope you can enjoy the rest of your trip!

BridesmaidHelp · 02/09/2021 06:17

Thanks yes I will just show them the advert plus the fact that I asked for a quiet room and see if they will move us. It’s the first night and we did attempt to talk to manager who is only in this morning. Thanks for your help!

Did it actually say "view of the Acropolis" or did it say "landmark view"? The phrase "landmark view" is deliberately vague - anything could be argued to be a "landmark view".

ImInStealthMode · 02/09/2021 07:51

No they don't have to mention they are beside a brothel in their description. I write travel brochure copy as part of my job and such a hotel would be 'situated in a vibrant part of the city'.

Rooms wise ask if they can change you, but booking.com bookings are usually paying less than anyone else in the hotel is by the time 20+ per cent commission has been paid so some hotels give less of a shit about the happiness of those clients vs direct bookers or higher paying operators (obviously many others treat every guest the same way regardless of rate, as they should do).

In future, best to check the reviews before you book rather than after

How patronising. OP didn’t say that she hadn’t checked the reviews.

Well if she had before she went then she'd know about the brothels as in OP's own words There are lots of reviews stating that it’s sandwiched between two lap dancing clubs so not family friendly at all! Though I have no children I prefer family friendly hotels

ThinWomansBrain · 02/09/2021 08:28

Vibrant part of the city Grin

Just make sure you write your own reviews on booking.com & tripadvisor

@BridesmaidHelp are you in Omonia? I used to live and work in Athens and that area is just the worst at night.
I’d try and move hotels to their sister hotel if you can, claiming they’ve mis-sold you on the view.
