121.8 is equivalent to
122 hours and 20 minutes is it not? I have a form of maths dyslexia. Apologise for sounding stupid.

121 hours 48 minutes

MiaMarshmallows · 01/09/2021 18:52

Thanks, everyone is giving different answers. I have had 123 from DP

It's a weird way of putting it, but I agree with 121 hours 48min. Wouldn't be over 122.

MenaiMna · 01/09/2021 19:19

If it helps the correct answer is found by adding 122 and 60 (minutes) X .8 as per PP

Your DP is reading it as 122 + 80 minutes which is why he's got it wrong at over 123 hrs
Your wrong answer 122 and 20minutes is 122+ (1/3 x60 minutes) - don't know how you got there but I could easily do it too. I used to work flexi time and basically had to memorise all the increments - I'm usually pretty number-challenged myself.

121.8 is equivalent to 121 hours plus 0.8 of an hour. 0.1 of hour is 6 (60/10) x 8 which equals 48 minutes. So worked 121 hours and 48 mins in total

Thank you. I must be really thick as I couldn't work that out at all.

OP posts:
Gingernaut · 01/09/2021 22:22

1 hour is 60 minutes

1/10 of an hour is 6 minutes

8/10 of an hour would be 8 x 6.

0.8 of an hour is 48 minutes

goose1964 · 01/09/2021 22:28

@MiaMarshmallows you don't sound thick, my DD has discalculia too and it causes her problems like this. There are plenty of people who have no problems with maths who get confused by this.

caketiger · 01/09/2021 22:34

How does anyone get 123 when .8 is less than one. Divide an hour into ten. 10 x 6 minutes. So . 8 is 8 tenths. So 8 x 6 = 48.

MiaMarshmallows · 01/09/2021 22:38

Could anyone else easily work this out because I have asked several people in my family and they all gave me a different answer ! I'll go with the majority vote here though

My head hurts

Glad it's not just me @Amandasummers

Yeah, I would find something like this easy enough (I hope that doesn't sound like me being a dick, I'm just answering your latest post). The only bit needing "worked out" is the 0.8 of an hour part (48 mins as already said).

You already know it's 121 hours, then add on what 0.8 of an hour is. The answer has to be less than 122 hours, as 0.8 is less than 1. Does that make sense?
