There must be some area around south Manc where house prices have not gone up massively.

Working near central Manchester and the school is in south Manchester. Is there somewhere which has not gone up massively in the last few months? I was considering buying in Hulme/withington but prices seem to have gone up dramatically.

Is the school you refer to where your DC go? I’d just do a search for a 5 mile radius of the school and see what comes up in your budget. Parts of Moss Side will be cheaper than Hulme or Withington - but you might find a smaller place in a ‘better’ area if you can compromise on space.

If you’re talking about buying rather than renting, I’d also check out the various shared ownership schemes which have helped a few of my friends get started.

Thank you @KellyJonesLeatherTrousers

@KellyJonesLeatherTrousers not sure how moss side is these days. Is it different on different streets or generally ok?

Has your child got a place at the school? Schools in South Manchester are over subscribed and you need to live within catchment.

Konstantine8364 · 31/08/2021 23:24

Parts of reddish near Stockport and baguley in wythenshawe are still relatively affordable and reasonable areas. Moss side is better than it was but still not particularly safe imho.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 01/09/2021 07:06

I don’t know it well enough for a view on individual streets, you asked about cheaper areas. Perhaps look for Moss Side into Whalley Range.

mokojolo · 01/09/2021 07:14

Don't move to Moss Side with kids.

Northern Moor the place where people I know have been moving who can't afford Chorlton and have kids in Chorlton schools.

mumda · 01/09/2021 16:53

North Manchester is as bad. House prices have just about doubled on my street in the last 18 months. It's insane. Properly seriously insane.

Someone told me last week his potential mortgage is gone though as they want 18% deposit.

Jemi09 · 01/09/2021 17:03

What is your budget?

MrsHookey · 01/09/2021 19:59

230,000

I don't want an area where child will be at risk. Child is on the spectrum and will be high school age in a few years.

You can get a small 2-3 bed in Levenshulme for that amount but it's tough. We bought ours in late 2017 for 225, it's now worth 300+. If we hadn't bought then, we wouldn't have been able to afford it.

Bit far out, but look at Cheadle Hulme?

You could get a nice 2 bedroom house in Levenshulme on that budget. If you need 3 bedrooms then there are some nice parts of Burnage and Withington where you could get something on that budget.

You won't get much in Cheadle Hulme for £230,000. I certainly wouldn't move to Hulme or Moss Side, I've worked in the area on and off for years and there was frequent stabbings, street robberies, attacks on houses and cars.
ElmtreeMama · 03/09/2021 11:12

Edgeley, Withington, Reddish, davenport

Monr0e · 03/09/2021 11:13

What school is your child at if you don't mind saying? I'm guessing you want to be within reasonable travel distance. South Manchester is a huge area, it would be helpful to know roughly what area you are looking at

sw12londoner · 26/10/2022 13:52

Edgeley - is just about affordable these days but you'd need to get in quickly. You can still buy a 2 bedroom terrace for around 220k mark. House prices in the area have shot up recently - I assume it's to do with the new development close by. And as we know, prices are only going to increase. We've some good schools in Edgeley too, with good Ofsted ratings. From a family perspective, there is a really lovely, warm community. Lots of community things going on such as Halloween trails and stuff. Unless we have more children, I can't see us leaving the area.

SundownOnTheStair · 26/10/2022 13:58

Do NOT move to Moss Side

Pabbs · 26/10/2022 14:00

I live in Withington. Its a shit hole.

I wish I could get out of here.

Hulme, Moss Side, Levenshulme, burnage, Whalley Range.

All shit holes too.

Alot of Chorlton is. Apart from the posh part. But still high burglary levels.

Didsbury is just posh people overpaying for everything. Mini London.

Vikingess · 26/10/2022 14:49

You can still get something decent in M32 (Gorse Hill & Stretford) at that price.
