To wish you can filter languages on Netflix

I start watching it, then after a few minutes realise it’s not in English or it’s English dubbed.

Not what I want when I just want something to watch. I have to have extra concentration when it’s foreign

I know in the blurb there is a tiny bit of writing saying what language it is, but it isn’t obvious

Why can’t we filter our choices by languages?

Unless you're dyslexic or similar, I really don't see what difference subtitles make. Or if you're just using the TV for background noise rather than actually watching it. Quite often I'll be watching something in one language with subtitles in English which is my second language and I can't say it makes any real difference.

Admittedly, I don't like dubs either so I don't watch dubbed movies.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind if the option was there, but it's not something I'd really use.

Reloxa · 31/08/2021 11:43

I wish it did too. I usually go on the internet or read at the same time as having the tv on - I rarely concentrate just on the TV which you have to for subtitles.

I’m short sighted but not enough to wear glasses full time but enough that trying to read subtitles really strains my eyes

And I’m sure there are lots of people who want to half listen while browsing Instagram or something. Reading subtitles is much more involved than watching passively. I think it would be a good idea

Same!!

I drift in and out which is difficult when it’s in a foreign language

I have subtitles on anyway because I’m severely hard of hearing, but it throws me off when the mouth shape (I lip read) doesn’t match what the subtitles say

Takes me twice as long to absorb and I often find myself missing bits because I can’t understand what’s going on

Ignore Cheshire Chat, no idea why anyone would think that's a reasonable reply to a reasonable question.

Yes, I also wish you could filter by language, it's a bit silly now that Netflix have decided to just lump every mediocre foreign language film I'm with the mediocre English offerings.

I'm a huge fan of world cinema, my very favourite movie is Brazilian and i can think of truly wonderful movies from Germany, France, Spain, Thailand, Korea & Japan that I've enjoyed over the past 12 months. But these rubbish movies on Netflix, they are like the film's you catch on Dutch daytime TV that haven't even managed a DVD release.

Keep foreign language films separate, it's not hard. And stop fobbing us off with made for TV movies, you'll put a whole generation off foreign film altogether.

HorseGallopingOnATomato · 31/08/2021 11:54

Pretty sure you can filter by language? Scroll to the very bottom of Netflix (it looks like infinity scroll but it isn’t, just keep scrolling) and click on “audio and subtitles” at the bottom under social media links

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 31/08/2021 11:58

I agree OP. Its annoying. I dont mind subtitles so much but hate english dubbed programmes.

FlumpsAreShit · 31/08/2021 12:00

I would like this as well because I quite like watching French programmes and find it tricky to find them sometimes! Agree I hate anything dubbed.

CheshireChat · 31/08/2021 12:01

Bigtruth huh, never realised my opinion would be seen as controversial.

I grew up with subtitles as there's very few movies in my native language (comparatively speaking) so don't really notice them anymore. And for less mainstream movies, I can't even get subtitles in my native language so rely on English.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 31/08/2021 12:01

I personally don't use subtitles, I very rarely have time to sit and actually watch something so it's on in the background whilst I listen to it.

YANBU, I would love a filter by language feature

i have managed to change mine to spanish . I dont speak spanish so I can't follow instructions to turn it back
I am a twat

CheshireChat · 31/08/2021 12:09

OhSmellyCatSmellyCat do you have any other profiles on the account? As different profiles can have different languages (bit gltichy, but usually works).

Or if you get Google translate on your phone, you can hover over the TV screen and see what it says so maybe you can change it back that way.

Ponoka7 · 31/08/2021 12:09

@CheshireChat, it's not so much controversial as dismissive. There are lots of circumstances were people might not manage subtitles.

Weirdly enough, a tv program I was watching in English, suddenly turned to Spanish and will not turn back

Everything else is in English except this one program. Reported the fault to Netflix who were about as useful as a chocolate tea pot

I wish it did too - DH is far from dyslexic, but refuses to watch film with subtitles. I don't mind subtitles- it means I have to pay attention to the film than check my phone.

There have been times we've started watching a film and had to stop because of DH hating the subtitles.

CatJumperTwat · 31/08/2021 12:13

I've wished the same many times! I actually have subtitles on for everything (so much MUMBLING) but then often I have a movie on while I'm doing other things, so not able to stare at the screen constantly. So many times I've started a movie then realised it's not in English.

I do watch the foreign films but it needs to be a time when I can sit down with my full attention on it.

SirenSays · 31/08/2021 12:26

Totally agree. It's a nightmare when I want background noise.

CorianderBee · 31/08/2021 14:31

I use subtitles even on English shows 😂 Far easier to read than hear what they're all muttering quietly.

Might be my ears though

CatJumperTwat · 31/08/2021 17:53

Not just you Coriander. So much mumbling.

RandomLondoner · 31/08/2021 18:07

For one series I watched, when I looked at settings, it was available in four spoken languages (so 3 dubbed and one original) and there was also choice of several languages for subtitles. I think the default was dubbed to English with no subtitles, which was unacceptable for me as I don't like dubbed, but I was happy to watch after changing to original language for soundtrack with English subtitles.
