To use a sofa bed every night?

My son is moving into a student flat with a tiny bedroom and I wondered if he would be better with a small sofa bed rather than a bed. Is it okay to sleep on one every night? Does anyone have a super comfy one? Thanks

@WaterIsBest

How about ‘A day bed’ ? Ikea do a good one.

A’sofa in the day, but a proper bed at night

Most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept in even with a mattress topper on it.

If you are going to sleep on a sofa bed all the time you need to get one that is designed for every day use. Mine has a thick matres and wooden slatted bottom and I have been using it for years. It is as comfortable as a regular bed and cost me £900 I have never had any aches or pains from useage

No, just get a bed.

In your opinion !

You can get a better quality mattress!

Much better than a sofa bed imo

We have a couple in our guest room and the instructions said they weren't suitable for regular use.

We have this in our spare room. I slept on it for a while whilst pregnant and annoyed with snoring husband and found it v comfortable

We all used futons back when I was a student. Is that an option? Mind you I only knew one person who ever folded their bed up!

I lived in a small studio in London with my partner and slept for a year and half on a brilliant sofa bed. Every bit as comfortable as a bed and so easy to set up. But they are expensive. We got ours on eBay for 400 quid but were lucky. Look for one with a Lampolet mechanism (Milano Bedding and Furl sell them, as do others). Instead of having to take the cushions off, the cushions stay on and you pull from the top of the sofa where your shoulders would rest and the bed just unfurls to reveal a real foam mattress. A new nice one will run you about 2k. BUT it's an investment that is worth it in many cases. It is an excellent guest bed and comfortable sofa in its own right when you move into a larger home. Having it meant we had a usable flat and saved hundreds on rent every month compared to a one bedroom. When people came over, they asked us where our bedroom was because the studio looked like a normal lounge.
The downside is that they are heavy and hard to move. So so heavy.
I had an Ikea Beddinge for a while and slept on it when my parents came to visit and gave them my bed. It wasn't bad and there are loads available second hand for a song.

What about a platform bed? Pushed into the corner and then use cushions during the day time. With no headboard, it doesn't look too much of a bed. My daughter has this one. It's is a very sturdy design, and she makes it up to look like a sofa during the day, but takes them off to sleep. Most students will just have a bed anyway, so it wouldn't look out of place.

How long is he going to be living there for? If it is for much longer than a couple of years, then a study bed could also be an option? But at almost £2k, they're not cheap!

No, just get a bed. Better for his back and his social life.

ittakes2 · 31/08/2021 03:33

Maybe a wall bed which is a desk by day and turns into a bed at night?

Yep, this Grin

No student is going to fold and unfold a sofa bed every day. And he’ll have sex on it, it will be revolting very quickly.
