A few weeks ago I put a dark brown hair dye on my blonde hair, but it’s just too dark for my colouring..... .Im wondering if I could put some blonde streaks on it to “soften it a bit” at home? ......I just can’t afford the hairdressers. Has anyone done this successfully? Tia.

I did once but it was a special kit that had a plastic cap with strategically placed holes in it. I wouldn't dare just do it and place the strands of hair in foil. Sorty can't remember the name of the brand.

Fimofriend · 30/08/2021 21:53

Sorry not Sorty. Is that even a word?

I did as a teenager...well I put blonde stripes in the front and 'patches' in the back successfully. More mirrors would have helped, I was using the bathroom cabinet mirror so I couldn't see the back of my head!

You can get the caps with holes in that should make it much easier, I foolishly decided I didn't need one.

Starrynight468 · 30/08/2021 22:02

I used to use the cap thing. It was great tbh, I loved my blonde highlights!

SalsaLove · 30/08/2021 22:04

I’ve seen some awful dye jobs with those caps. They don’t allow for subtle blending.

OwlBasket · 30/08/2021 22:06

What sort of due was it? You should be able to fade or strip it, one way or another.

OwlBasket · 30/08/2021 22:07

Was the blonde before the brown natural btw?

BelleOfTheProvince · 30/08/2021 22:11

Baby shampoo speeds up colour fade, so you could try and fade the brown instead of adding bleach and further damaging your hair.

Wheresmrpenguin · 30/08/2021 22:16

Ive done it loads, I'm far from professional but always comes out good. My tips are to do it with foils, and take much thinner strips than you think you'd need. If it's just subtle highlights you want, a blonde with pre lighter in it should be OK, and then use a toner after.

ThreeLittleDots · 30/08/2021 23:08

I don't think you can bleach dyed brown hair? You'd need to strip it all and start again, but I'm no expert!

TigersandTeddybears · 30/08/2021 23:11

You can still buy those hair dyeing caps. If I was going to try it I would go for one of those. I have put foils in the front of my hair and parting before but it was really difficult and the effect was not great tbh.

Duchess379 · 30/08/2021 23:45

I always dye & highlight my own hair. Have never had a hairdressers do it.
I'd be weary of going light if you've literally just gone dark. You could over process your hair & break the ends off or end up with some orange highlights. How dark have you gone?

Blossomsbloom · 31/08/2021 02:24

I put a colour on that was far too dark in lockdown. I bought a bleach box and just pulled out very thin sections of hair and put foil over them. I left the bleach on for 20-30 minutes and then used a toner type thing from superdrug in a reddish tone. It looked really nice. No substitute for a professional job but made me feel better during lockdown.
