Witnessing Joe Biden at news briefings is painful.

I tend to agree.

CorrBlimeyGG · 30/08/2021 14:42

Are you aware that he has a stammer?

What age would you suggest? Biden is far more eloquent than many younger men.

newnortherner111 · 30/08/2021 14:44

No, just a requirement that they are capable, and have basic morals and respect for human life. Which Mr Johnson does not have, for example.

The US is also a much less centralised country.

pointythings · 30/08/2021 14:46

I knew this would be another Biden bashing thread. Pathetic. Also ageism isn't a good look.

CounsellorTroi · 30/08/2021 14:46

It’s not as if Trump was the height of eloquence.

SecondCityShark · 30/08/2021 14:47

Definitely. Let younger people with more energy take the reigns.

I would say normal retirement age (65?) should be the upper limit.

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 14:47

I'd like to see an age limit imposed on the Supreme Court as well, if an age limit has to be brought in.

But not 70 - that's too young. If it was 75 on taking office, fair enough, and/or a competency test.

I speak as an old gimmer who faces and sees ageism daily.

SiobhanSharpe · 30/08/2021 14:48

Not as painful as watching the last incumbent, who was a few years younger.
(This is the problem with age limits, one 78 year-old can be mentally tip-top, or at least on the ball, others less so.)

I'm thinking cognitive decline, not political point scoring. I'm not able to give a qualified assessment but I do think their is cause for concern.

Same with driving licences.

whatswithtodaytoday · 30/08/2021 15:01

Did you feel the same about Trump, OP?

Bathshebahardy · 30/08/2021 15:02

I think there should be an age limit, though I am not sure how high it should be, possibly 75, maybe 70 but 65 is too young.
I was called ageist for saying this to some friends.

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 15:02

I know I do. No way was that man cognitively capable.
LaurieFairyCake · 30/08/2021 15:03

I don't think there's any cause for concern

And I thought Trump was thicker than mince and should have had an IQ test - not intelligent enough to grasp the complexities of office IMO

DGRossetti · 30/08/2021 15:15

Sounds fair enough to me. We can introduce it the same time we stop people the same age voting.

SiobhanSharpe · 30/08/2021 15:19

DGRosetti and at the same time we could impose educational or property owning requirements. 😂😂

SiobhanSharpe · 30/08/2021 15:21

Sorry, 'DGRossetti* ☺️

Trouble is that younger people have less life experience/wisdom. We need a "middle ground". There've been some pretty hopeless "young" politicians. It's a shame that the voters never get much of a choice as to who they vote as president or political party leader. We seem to end up with Hobson's Choice and have to choose negatively, i.e. vote for the best of a bad bunch.

But far less eloquent than many younger men too
Toddlerteaplease · 30/08/2021 15:31

I think this for Pope. Watching the decline of JPII was awful. Far better to retire like Benedict XVI

DGRossetti · 30/08/2021 15:31

Universal suffrage is overrated really. No use having a vote if the electoral process ignores anyone who doesn't vote for the winner.
eddiemairswife · 30/08/2021 15:39

For the UK I think that Eton and a PPE should not be an automatic route into Parliament. A few years at a proper job unconnected with politics should be a requirement.

CoRhona · 30/08/2021 15:44

Anything and anyone would have been better than Trump. So on that basis, YABU.

3GreenPullups · 30/08/2021 15:48

@3GreenPullups

I have been thinking more about this. I do think Biden is out of his depth. is that because of his age? i think there have been questions around cognitive decline so perhaps. Trump was definitely unfit for the job IMO and his cognitive abilities I very seriously question.

But perhaps a blanket 'too old at x age' is too prescriptive.

I'm not sure now. But I think as so often happens Biden was unprepared for the realities of the job. He sounds out of his depth and someone trying to convey gravitas like an actor playing President.

boobot1 · 30/08/2021 15:53

I agree
