Walking to parks/shops alone

Just wanting a sanity check. I’m not being unreasonable not wanting my 5 year old to walk to a local park or shop without adult supervision am i? An 8 year old brother would be ‘in charge’.

The 5 year old is too young and the 8 year old is not old enough to supervise. I started allowing this at age 11 but it does depend where you live.

Hell no chance

CeeJay81 · 27/08/2021 19:31

No def not. I'd say about 9/10, we live in a safe area too. I don't let my 12 year old take my 7 year old. Maybe next year.

Loloball · 27/08/2021 19:31

Thank you!

Probably not, unless you're going to drip feed that you live above the shop, which is run by your DM and right next to the park and they're nearer than if they're in the back garden. Plus you live on a remote island where everyone knows everyone.

FindingMeno · 27/08/2021 19:49

No way.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/08/2021 19:50

No sorry, I wouldn't.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 27/08/2021 19:50

I’m at 4 and 7 and counting down the days until we can allow this, but it’s definitely not next year. Round our way, children seem to be allowed to do this sort of thing in Year 5 or 6.

My 8yo goes to the shop at the end of the road with her 10yo sister. Thats only in the last few months.
I wouldn't trust my 8yo to be in charge of a goldfish on the way to the shop let alone a 5yo.

ActonSquirrel · 27/08/2021 19:56

It's old in Japan. Start them at 4 years old

Rosebel · 27/08/2021 20:42

Not at those ages. Maybe at 10 and 7 depending on maturity but certainly no earlier.

icedcoffees · 27/08/2021 20:43

8/9 year olds go to the shops or the park alone where we live, but I wouldn't expect them to be in charge of a 5yo at the same time.

TheCanyon · 27/08/2021 21:36

My almost 11yo goes to the park/shop with our almost 7yo twins, both 5 min walk. she's a right fucking bossy boots though and phones me if they so much as dare breathe Grin

RedHelenB · 27/08/2021 21:38

Mine were 7 when they walked to the local shop. 5 too young and at 8 that's too much responsibility in terms of if the youngest being near the road.

Planty13 · 27/08/2021 21:38

I wouldn’t let my 8 year old go to the shop or park alone yet…..

Tell your Ex to stop being a dick.
