Pocket Money

Not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

Have 2 DD, 8 and 5.

My 8 year old used to get pocket money a couple of years ago (£1 on a Saturday) but for some reason, this kind of stopped.

This evening she was asking if she can have pocket money again which I'm ok with. She's generally a good kid but lately gets a bit sulky if we go to the shops and I say no when she asks for a toy or something. As a treat, every now and again I will let them choose something if they have done especially well in school etc but I will not get into habit of buying them stuff just because they have asked for it. They know once I say no, I mean no.
Anyway, I told her that it will be good for her to learn the value of money and how you can't always buy something just because you want it and sometimes you need to save up. I've told her she can use her pocket money on what she wants but she will need to remember that once she's spent it, she will need to wait until she gets pocket money again.

So my question is what is a reasonable amount of pocket money for an 8 year old and should the 5 year old get the same amount??

(Obviously, we would cover all basic needs. Pocket money can be used on sweets/toys/magazines etc)

Ex sorts out the pocket money for the kids here. Each child gets up to £20 per month.
DD5, DSS11, DSD12. They're expected to help out with housework tasks and keep their rooms tidy for that money.

They each have their own bank cards (HyperJar) so no risk of coins going missing which is usually a problem with DSD taking other people's money

DH & I put £20 each into a savings account for our DC instead of pocket money & their Christmas & birthday money goes in there as well.
