AIBU to have not heard of E10 petrol?

OK so went to the local garage this evening, needed to fill up to get to work in the morning. "Something" looked different and I noticed that the 95 Octane petrol has the label E10 on it.

Did a quick google and it said as a country we were switching from E5 to E10 petrol from 1st September 2021 and some older cars can't run E10 petrol.

Did a longer google and realised that my vehicle is one of those older cars affected and will have to use Super Unleaded petrol from now on, which is considerably more expensive.

Am I the only one not to have heard of E10 petrol? If you have heard about it, how did you hear of it?

Never heard of this!

Gladioli23 · 25/08/2021 20:56

I also hadn't heard of it and was thankfully alright, but it was an anxious 5 minutes of googling at the petrol station while I worked it out.

I think every car from 2008 onwards should be compatible if I remember correctly.

SisterAgatha · 25/08/2021 20:57

Yanbu, I didn’t hear of it till last week either.

Also your username is intriguing to me... are you n London?

Pinkflipflop85 · 25/08/2021 20:59

There's been lots of radio ads about it for a while. No use if you don't listen to commercial radio though!

Flowerlane · 25/08/2021 20:59

I noticed this for the first time about 4 weeks ago when we was on holiday. I was filling up at a Tesco garage and as I was filling up the tank noticed that it said E10 and not the normal E5! I panicked at the pump and thought I had put the wrong pump in. Grin
Luckily my car can take E10.

Haven’t seen it in any garage since.

FreeBritnee · 25/08/2021 21:00

Haven’t heard a thing.

Aprilx · 25/08/2021 21:00

I have heard of it only because DH has mentioned it to me, because we are looking for a new run around second car at the moment.

Floralnomad · 25/08/2021 21:00

It’s been in the media for the last few weeks .

ChickpeaCrunch · 25/08/2021 21:00

It was on a bus stop

EastWestWhosBest · 25/08/2021 21:01

I’ve heard about it vaguely. I know my car is ok.

Lincslady53 · 25/08/2021 21:01

I heard about E10 about 6 weeks ago.

CourgetteGlutTony · 25/08/2021 21:01

It’s been on the BBC website

Donatella · 25/08/2021 21:02

I hadn't heard about it until today, when I was driving past a petrol station and saw a sign, couldn't read it though as I couldn't stop. Thanks for filling in the details though!

MalfunctioningRobot · 25/08/2021 21:02

I’ve heard a few adverts on the radio. Checked if my car was ok with the new petrol but don’t really know much else about it.

Lincslady53 · 25/08/2021 21:02

Posted before I had finished. I think I read about it in the paper.

snowspider · 25/08/2021 21:03

I've heard of it, read about it a while ago and checked my car on the .gov site. Apparently lawnmowers etc can't run on it.

MissConductUS · 25/08/2021 21:03

E10 has been the standard in the US since 2010.

Coasterfan · 25/08/2021 21:03

My car says unleaded E5 E10 when I open the petrol cap so I knew it existed but I have never used it!

TwoLeftElbows · 25/08/2021 21:04

Radio ads

CaffeineAndNicotine · 25/08/2021 21:05

I heard it on a radio advert. My car is older but a BMW so OK.

horseymum · 25/08/2021 21:06

There have been signs on forecourts for several months here in Scotland.

LadyDanburysCane · 25/08/2021 21:07

I’ve had my car since 2019 and it says E10 and E5 on the inside of the petrol flap thingy. I’ve been noticing radio “ads” about it for quite some time.

SimonJT · 25/08/2021 21:07

There have been radio ads, tv ads, news bits and info displayed at fuel stations for quite a while. E10 is standard elsewhere.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/08/2021 21:09

Heard about it a while back. We had to check for DHs motorbike (thankfully ok).

snowspider · 25/08/2021 21:09

Though to be fair I only registered the current standard was called E5 at the same time
