P6/P7 teacher in Northern Ireland? Please?!

My child is home educated due to a number of learning difficulties. They're entering P6 and would dearly love to go to grammar school. This means sitting the AQE assessment test. We access a range of resources (like White Rose and Singapore Maths) and use adaptive technologies. However all of this is pitched at English children entering Year Five with SATS to prepare for. I don't know what Maths and English text books are used by Northern Irish schools. I don't know how the curriculums are different (comparing them, they don't seem to be but I keep hearing that they are). I don't know what resources are used to prepare for the AQE test. Most of all, I don't know how my able but different child is ever going to score highly on them.

I've got the revision booklets from AQE but it seems like too little to go on. Can anyone help? I would pay for someone to coach me at this point!

Thank you.

Why pay for someone to coach you, instead of to coach your child?
I’m sure there are as many tutoring companies in NI offering AQE prep as there are in England offering SATS prep!

Join the Transfer Tutor FB group and get the app. The app is great for practise questions and the FB group has all the info you will need on the curriculum etc.

You should be able to get recommendations for tutors in your area on there too.

My child is accessing coaching but in our experience most learning happens at home, with this child. I carry responsibility and need to know.

Thank you feather, I'll follow this up.

I would still be very grateful to hear from a teacher if anyone is out there.

OP you can buy the transfer practice papers online to do at home.

dontstealmymagnolias · 25/08/2021 17:54

OP have you checked whether or not the access arrangements your son requires could be met by AQE? I would work backwards and start with that first, no point investing £££ only to discover he can't sit the exam for whatever reason.

Why don't you contact the school directly ( primary school) and get guidance directly from them. I'm from NI and I know they offer guidance and support for parents and students going through transfer tests

www.thetransfertest.com/ These are the practice papers, my son is using in school. He's just gone into P7.

DS1 used these as well a few years ago. The difference this year is that they get 1 hr 10 mins instead of an hour. The comprehension is also supposed to be a little easier and some of the harder maths topics aren't included AFAIK. Saying that my sons school are teaching the full curriculum as normal because they feel the kids will need to know the topics anyway.

I would also check out the SEN provision for your chosen grammar school. Some are definitely better than others. There are a few different transfer groups on Facebook, if I were you, I'd be lurking on all of them.

Some of the past papers for AQE are free on their website, you need to pay for the more recent papers though. Agree about the Transfer Tutor. The team run a support group on Facebook which is really good, lots of support and advice.

As others have said there's revision papers etc you can purchase. It's an appalling system based on endless repetition. Two of my children did it and went to grammar schools as a result. My oldest girl is dyslexic and the aqe providers said they couldn't give her extra time or any additional help. Hopefully that has changed but there was nil disability proofing at that time and I didn't put her in for it.

I stumbled across this the other day while looking at my tutors for my DS (also NI, also has some difficulties but is bright).

She has an interest in SEN and I think I read somewhere on the website that she offers sessions to parents as well!

I've just asked my daughter and they used the Target your Maths books in P6 and P7.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 25/08/2021 18:53

Where are you. I have a huge box of old tests for both exams and happy to pass on

Seeituse · 25/08/2021 20:27

Thank you so much for these tips.

Implants thank you for asking your daughter!
