Quarantining at hotel in Portugal? What’s it like? Any experiences?

Hi, was wondering if anyone could help. We book a holiday a little while ago to Portugal. Non refundable. Unfortunately I won’t have had my second vaccine in time for when we arrive for me to not have to quarantine for the first bit of my stay (as you need to have had your second one at least 14 days ago). We will be staying in a hotel in the algarve. I’ve been looking everyone online and I can’t seem to find much detail on exactly what the quarantine rules are. Am I not even allowed to step outside my hotel room for fresh air?? Anyone done this? What exactly is it like?

Thanks in advance!

1, why have you not had your second yet, did you have your first late?
2, why would you even consider going away if you have to quarantine?
And 3, yes that means you don’t step foot outside!

Isn't it 14 days quarantine? Can't imagine that'll be much of a holiday sitting in a hotel room for two weeks! Have you checked that your hotel will allow guests who are quarantining? Otherwise it might have be a government-approved place?

Unless you are going for like six weeks, I think I would be staying home!

I don’t think you’ll be able to quarantine in your regular hotel, there will be quarantine hotels you have to stay in, away from the rest of the people you’re going with (unless they aren’t vaccinated either). Yes, it means you can’t step outside at all.

Are you saying that you'll hit the 14 days post vaccination part way through your holiday so will quarantine until that point?

LadyPenelope68 · 24/08/2021 10:34

Plus, it’s 14 days isolation isn’t it for Portugal? Unless you’re going for a month or more, I just don’t get why you would go if you’ve got to isolate for 14 days.

Ah maybe you're allowed out if that happens, so that might not be quite so bad! Make sure you check that's the case though OP if you haven't already. It might be once you start quarantine you have to complete it regardless.

Yes

Can you sell the holiday? The foreign office says it can be in the accommodation or a quarantine hotel but I would check with your own hotel first to see if they let you stay there. I wouldn't want to quarantine for 14 days to be honest as I dont think you are allowed out of the room at all even on the balcony etc.

Maybe post on the tripadvisor algarve forum as someone who has been or is there might be able to advise better.

ConstanceGracy · 24/08/2021 10:41

I don’t think you can just hop out of quarantine just because you’re all of a sudden post 14 days from vaccination. Never heard that

HJ40 · 24/08/2021 10:43

Are you 100% sure you can do that? Sorry to ask if you've double checked already as I know that wasn't your question when you started the thread, but that would seem very unusual as the form you complete prior to arrival is all about giving the details of where you'll be quarantining for the full 14 days.

Starjammer · 24/08/2021 10:48

Yes, I would assume the 14 days post vaccine requirement is purely on entry, not if you reach it at some point during your stay. So if you don't meet the criteria on entry, you have to quarantine regardless if you then meet the criteria subsequently.

Lweji · 24/08/2021 10:49

I agree that you're likely to have to keep the 14 day isolation. If you got infected before the vaccine is fully effective it might take 14 days to develop symptoms. (I have my reservations about these rules, but I don't decide them)

If you hit the 14 days post vaccination, say, a couple of days into the holiday, you might be better off booking a flight for that date and arrive a couple of days later. Otherwise you risk spending your holiday in the hotel room.

And, yes, the recommendation is that you don't leave your accommodation unless absolutely necessary.

LadyPenelope68 · 24/08/2021 10:54

We’ve done friends who were in similar situation. Your quarantine status is based on arrival in the country, so if you have to start quarantine then you HAVE to do the full 14 days, you can’t stop quarantine just because you reach the post 14 days vaccination. As someone else has previously mentioned as well, lots of the hotels won’t let you quarantine there, you have to go to specific ones.

Whichjab · 24/08/2021 11:07

Did you book the holiday recently or delay your vaccs, just interested. Also don't think you can leave quarantine early.
