Giving petrol money to friend ...

kellybrit45 · 23/08/2021 16:44

Next week me and a friend are travelling from Durham to Blackpool for a weekend away
It's around 3 hours there and 3 hours back.
I was thinking of giving her £40 petrol money.
Is this enough ?
Should I be giving more as she's driving ?
How much would you pay ?
I think it's around 270 miles altogether both ways.

Ask her to tell you how much?

Burnt0utMum · 23/08/2021 16:49

Depends on the car. £40 is about what that journey would cost me in a 2.0L diesel car. Are you planning to cover the full fuel cost or just half?

kellybrit45 · 23/08/2021 16:51

I was thinking just half the fuel cost.
Do you think that's fair ?
I don't want to ask her as she will say she doesn't want anything ..and I won't let her not take any money.

Tell her to fill the tank up before you leave, fill it up again when you get back and let you know how much half the fuel costs were.

I'd get her to fill up the tank and I'd go pay for it.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/08/2021 16:56

Personally, I would also treat her to lunch or dinner since it's her car and she's doing all of the driving.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 23/08/2021 17:20

That’s about £40 in fuel so id pay half and get the drinks/snacks when stopping as a thank you for driving.

NewlyGranny · 23/08/2021 17:26

If you can afford it, I'd pay for a fill when you get home, assuming she starts with a full tank. That means you'll have paid for all the fuel, but she will have done all the work of driving. You need to consider the costs of running a car such as tax, insurance, oil, tyres, servicing etc etc which she is covering in full. And the train would be way more.

Sneak in for snacks while she's doing the fill and pay for it before she notices and there's no argument.

I'm taking her out for an Italian tomorrow and cocktails as a thanks but that's a good idea about sneaking in to pay for petrol etc
