Help! How on earth can I send cash to elderly relative in France??

Posting in AIBU for traffic....

My very elderly father in law (late 80's) and despite COVID he is still a die hard traveller. He is currently staying in a holiday let flat in a quiet part of France.

I know its not ideal - but he won't listen to us....

I just spoke to him and he has damaged his debit card and it won't work. He also has a credit card but can't remember the number.

He's due to fly home Monday but has no money left at all and can't access any.

How on earth do I transfer cash out there for him so he can get home? Can I just transfer to a local bank and he can pick it up?

Who does he bank with?

Thehop · 21/08/2021 14:11

Can he ask credit card company for an emergency pin for credit card?

Gosh, that's a tricky one. International transfers take time. Are you with HSBC or Barclays? Both have a presence in France, if you call them they might have a solution. Otherwise you might need to go to France to collect him...

Does he have his card registered with Apple Pay on his phone?

I was going to suggest looking at Western Union or World Pay. It might be hard to pick up in a quiet area of France though.

Moneygram? You can send money via a post office.

Use a money transfer service like Western Union or Moneygram, then he can pick it up straight away - you need to check the nearest location on his end to make sure he can get there too, but if he can get to a bank it sounds like he's not in the back of beyond anyway. You may need to pay in cash on your end to make sure it gets there straight away, so make sure you pick the right option on offer.
