To think this milk tastes dirty?

We get a milk and egg delivery regularly from our local farm. Over the past few months I have noticed that the milk seems to have a stronger taste and almost like a weird lingering aftertaste hanging around my mouth for quite a while if I tried it on its own.

The only way I can describe it - and it sounds bonkers but I'm really lacking a better description so please bare with me - it almost tastes like the smell of the cows/barn. It's unpleasant and lingering and I'm considering cancelling the deliveries and sticking to supermarket milk as I can tolerate that perfectly well.

Does anyone know what it could be? It's been bugging me. I grew up with DGPs who had their own cows and even drank milk as soon as it was sieved and still warm as a little girl and never had this taste before. Is it my tastebuds or is this a thing?

I wonder if the cows have changed their diet in some way? Have you asked the dairy?
Also - just possible - but are you sure you haven’t had Covid? Altered smell and taste is possible. But odd if it’s just the one thing…

dustyflipflop · 21/08/2021 09:41

I haven't had covid and it is just the milk. And just THIS milk. Any other supermarket from you cheaper end to the kind of organic most expensive milk I've been completely fine with.

Is it raw milk?

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/08/2021 09:46

Supermarket milk is homogenised, farm milk is often not so you get separation of the milk and cream which gives a different taste. The milk if my childhood, but I understand others who grew up on homogenised don't like it.

The thing is I did not grow up with homogenized. If you read my OP I used to have raw milk as a child. This milk is pasteurized @Bryonyshcmyony

There's a bit of a separation between the milk and cream but I used to love it. For the past few months it all tastes off. Even in my coffee it's just odd.

Might be odd - could it be the weather? I've found in summer our milk always tasted a bit peculiar - figured it was being dropped off around 3am, and we'd get to it at 7ish when the sun was already up. A nice cool bag left out for the milkman helped us!

UpTheLaganInABubble · 21/08/2021 16:06

Is the milk from grass fed cows? I was told recently that the hot weather had scorched so much grass land, farmers were having to supplement their grass-fed cows. Could change the flavour of the milk, butter etc

I've eaten really fucking cheap bacon before and it tasted like the smell of a farm.

When we cooked it (I worked in a cafe) it would smell of the barn.

Fucking grim.

Summertime21 · 21/08/2021 16:07

Ask someone else to try it and see if they think the same

Patapouf · 21/08/2021 16:09

Smells like udders and it's disgusting. I'm not vegan FWIW but I can't understand why humans drink the breast milk of another animal 🤮

joystir59 · 21/08/2021 16:13

I only drink organic or filtered milk. Normal cows milk tastes vile.

borntobequiet · 21/08/2021 16:17

I buy milk that’s produced locally (within a 30 mile radius) and it does taste different at different times of the year, depending on what the cows have been eating, despite being pasteurised and homogenised in the normal way. But it never tastes unpleasant.

Spysolation · 21/08/2021 16:17

Yuk. Mastitis milk 🤮🤮🤮

Spysolation · 21/08/2021 16:17

Swap for cravendale. That’s my advice

glitterelf · 21/08/2021 16:21

I agree with @PickleAF it'll be the warmer weather and when it was delivered I've just this morning had a conversation with our milk suppliers who start deliveries from 11pm Shock

reprehensibleme · 21/08/2021 16:22

Had this before - it's down to what the cows are eating, probably silage in our case.

Lottle · 21/08/2021 16:49

When I didn't have dairy for a few weeks, then had it again, it did taste different and worse. Similar to your description. Did you have a break from it?

dustyflipflop · 23/08/2021 12:50

I have not had a break from it. It's actually been happening for the best part of the year so not a summer thing. To be honest my main concern was hygiene and if the reason for it might be the conditions the cows are kept in (I know it sounds silly but I don't know enough about it to be able to think of much else).

We live fairly rural and it's supposed to have a really good reputation. The majority of the village use the same chap.
