Neighbour’s alarm going off at 1am

It’s been half an hour now and he must be out. I can hear some kind of alarm going off. I don’t think it’s a smoke alarm. I know him to say hi to etc but we’re not overly friendly. I think the friendly girlfriend may have left him recently because I usually see her at the door smoking and haven’t for a few weeks. Problem is he’s a drug dealer, the smell of grass can be strong from the house, and I’m worried going to the door may be more hassle than it’s worth. Realistically, what would you do?

Call the police / emergency services

MidnightNeighbour · 21/08/2021 01:34

I’m thinking if I smell smoke which I expect I would have done by now, I’ll call emergency services. I’m not going to his door. It’s not safe at this time of day.

I’m wondering if it some kind of alarm for his ‘exotic plants’

It’s still going off and I’m so mad. I’ll be going to his door tomorrow for damn sure. I went outside to check it is coming from his house and the neighbours on the other side are awake too. He’s got all his windows open and it’s just as loud on the street. Argh!!! I want to sleep.

phone 101

alexdgr8 · 21/08/2021 02:31

why would you go to his door.
this is not an unusual event is it , annoying i know, but you can't get involved. that would be unwise. do nothing . pillow over ears, or radio on lightly in background.
this sort of thing happens all the time.

MidnightNeighbour · 21/08/2021 02:36

You’re right. There’s probably no point in going to his door. He’ll come home at some point tomorrow and we’ve got to all listen to it until he does. I looked up noise complaints and 101 don’t deal with them.

Is it a security alarm? If so, the police in our area ask you to alert them to this type of alarm going off - on the non emergency number if you don't see any accompanying suspicious activity. I guess you could do that anonymously if you thought he wouldn't welcome that.

MidnightNeighbour · 21/08/2021 02:54

They rent and don’t have a security alarm. I thought you had to give your details if you phone 101. Has anyone ever called them?

why don't you report him to the police if he is a drug dealer; i'd be much more concerned about that than an alarm going off.
i don't mean now.
alarms are always going off.

If they don't have a security alarm I would think it has to be a smoke alarm, can't think what else would be loud enough for you to hear. Think I'd call 101 and ask for advice, they might send police or fire service to do a welfare/safety check if there's a chance it is a smoke alarm.

CoasterCoaster · 21/08/2021 03:09

Would it really matter if you had to give your name if you were calling because you were worried his house was on fire?

MidnightNeighbour · 21/08/2021 03:13

He keeps to himself, is usually a quiet neighbour (only one other time in three years had a situation like this - loud noise in the middle of the night), there aren’t kids going into his house to buy drugs and there’s never people hanging around in the gardens off their heads. I’m not interested in trying to get him into trouble with the police. I just want this bloody noise to stop. It’s been over two hours now.

Could it be a carbon monoxide detector?

MidnightNeighbour · 21/08/2021 08:27

It got switched off at half four. I’m so tired but don’t have time for a lie in. I’ll sleep well tonight.
