Deliveries! Equipment for new job not arrived and I start on Monday

I'm due to start a new job on Monday working from home. I was offered the job 4 weeks ago and in all fairness, the company have been really organised and kept me up to date via emails. The equipment was suppose to have been delivered yesterday via a courier, but I received an email around 4pm to say that there was a delay with deliveries and that I would receive the package today instead. Absolutely fine, although slightly annoying as I'd waited in all day. The same thing has happened again today... it saids on the email that I will receive a text message 1 hour before their due to arrive but I've heard nothing. The tracking reference number doesn't show anything online either. I've even tried to phone the helpline but I was waiting for over 30 mins so just put the phone down, I doubt anyone would have answered any way.

They stop delivering at 7pm so I doubt it will come now. Open tomorrow but only until 1pm and shut on Sundays. I will wait in again tomorrow just incase. My employer isn't open on weekends so I can't contact them until Monday. Frustrating as it'll be the 3rd day tomorrow that I've had to stay in and wait around, I have plans as well. Can't be helped due to covid etc I suppose but equally I think they could have sorted delivery out a week ago incase of delays. I'm looking forward to starting the new job and they seem like a decent company to work for, lots of progression etc but if the equipment doesn't arrive by tomorrow I won't be able to start on Monday and will lose a days pay on top. Annoying!

Not sure what I'm even posting really, just a rant. Ordering a Chinese now so maybe that will put me in a good mood Grin

@Sunshinestate7

Don’t worry but got out at the weekend.
You can’t wait in all day next week as you are working

Don’t let it screw up the weekend.

If you are not in tomorrow and they try they will again next week.

Not your fault is it

Cascascascas · 20/08/2021 18:55

@Sunshinestate7

If the employer is mad they should have used a better courier and if they are shitty with you, you learn fast to get another job!

MattHancocksSexTape · 20/08/2021 19:14

they seem like a decent company to work for

Yet they are making you wait around for delivery of equipment on your time, not theirs. And if it doesn’t arrive before Monday you lose money waiting for their equipment to arrive?!

underneaththeash · 20/08/2021 19:30

I wouldn’t stay in again, sounds like they’ve lost it (especially if there’s no tracking number. I’d email anyway, even though they’re closed at weekends.

snackodactyl · 20/08/2021 19:36

wondering if you have a new job at my place. i joined a few months ago and didn’t get my equipment until the end of the first week…

CobblersCables · 20/08/2021 19:47

Why would you not be paid for Monday? You've made yourself available to work, their equipment failure (which I'd warn about now via email, don't wait until Monday) is not your problem. My staff would be paid for this. Why wouldn't you?

TheCanyon · 20/08/2021 19:48

Is it yodel? Honestly, that lot....

ThinWomansBrain · 20/08/2021 19:53

I started a new role at the beginning of July, about a month after I'd accepted the offer.
The laptop arrived last week - I could work on my own laptop, but only on local copies of files i'd been emailed. They did at least order my laptop and one each for all those they're expecting to join over the next month or so.

spicychickenwing · 20/08/2021 19:57

Why would you lose money because of it?

It is the employers responsibility to make sure the kit arrives. You should not put up with being penalised at all. You are contracted and available to work. Not your problem.

If you feel like being helpful. Use your phone, tablet or own home pc or laptop or push come to shove borrow one. They will be able to give you your log in details for ms teams over the phone so you can still join most of the induction sessions and you can access your emails via outlook online with the right log in details.

Your employer will be able to offer alternatives as anyone who has any new starters in the last year has been through this many times over.

Fingers crossed it turns up tomorrow or early monday. Hope you have a great first week!

Alternista · 20/08/2021 19:59

If you’re meant to start WFH on Monday you couldn’t go out on Monday anyway though?!

Did you contact your new employer to let them know the delay today when stuff didn’t arrive as planned?

BashfulClam · 20/08/2021 20:00

DH got a job and he got his equipment delivered at 7am on the start day. It’s not your fault.

altiara · 20/08/2021 20:01

Why wouldn’t you get paid on Monday to wait for the equipment?

LawnFever · 20/08/2021 20:05

They still need to pay you no matter what, it’s not your fault if their courier service hasn’t delivered

CatFaceCats · 20/08/2021 20:14

Of course you’ll get paid for Monday whether you have the stuff or not.
When I started my job, it took a while to get the equipment. They had to order it. Then once they received it, they had to set it all up for me, before it could then be sent on (although I offered to go and collect purely for something to do)
It’s just one of those things though - sometimes it just can’t be helped.

vanessalightfoot · 20/08/2021 21:11

This has happened where I work recently and it was due to equipment coming from the EU and being held until they paid the customs charge. There was some confusion when the new starter was asked to pay by the courier. Must have looked like a complete scam Confused.

Boood · 20/08/2021 21:26

Nearly every job I’ve ever started involved a few days sitting around waiting for hardware and systems access to be sorted out. It’s so standard I’m surprised when everything is ready on time.

BlankTimes · 20/08/2021 23:20

Even though your new employer won't be open over the weekend, I'd email and list the failed deliveries so far, so that your efforts to be in to receive the equipment are noted and timestamped.

It just looks much more professional coming from you now/after the latest delivery time on Saturday than it will in Monday morning.

Indigokitten · 20/08/2021 23:27

Have you emailed anyone to let them know that the equipment hasn’t arrived??

Sunshinestate7 · 21/08/2021 00:23

Sorry for the late reply. I went out to the cinema shortly after posting on here and I've only just checked my phone now.

Thanks for all the replies - first of all, I don't have a computer/laptop myself. My mum does have one but it's broken and anyone else that has one, such as my auntie uses theirs for work too.
I do have an iPhone and iPad, however the iPad is really slow as I've had it for years. I can always use my phone I suppose (what a nightmare when it's for 8 hours though). I'm not sure how well the Internet connection will be either, as at least with the equipment I'd be able to connect it to the WiFi router directly (with a cable their providing I think).

I have emailed the lady that I've been dealing with from the company but she doesn't work on weekends so she won't see it until Monday morning. I don't know anyone else that I can contact. I agree that I should be paid even if the equipment isn't here as clearly it's not my fault, but I have to actually log on/off the computer (I think) so they can track the hours that I've worked. Obviously I can't do that if the equipment doesn't arrive on time, hence why I doubt I'll be paid.

I think you might have read my post wrong @Alternista ? I don't expect to go out anywhere on Monday as I'm suppose to be starting work. I've waited in all day on Thursday, Friday and I will have to wait until 1pm today just incase it turns up. I've had no communication at all from the courier so I've no clue if it's on the way or they've lost the package. I've got plans today. I can still go out I suppose as they are suppose to contact me 1 hour before drop off, but it means having to stay close to my home and possibly drop everything that I'm doing to rush back if/when they text.
