To expect the price of motor homes to fall next year or after?

We’ve always enjoyed camping, but we’re getting in a bit and fancy the idea of a motorhome?
But they are ££££! to buy!

We recently hired one to try it out and to buy that exact model a few years old appears to be around 40-50K. This is just a simple 2 berth.

Did anyone buy something similar pre COVID? How much have the prices gone up? And are they likely to fall again once everyone goes back to holidays abroad?

No motorhome owners out there?

I’m hoping that as soon a foreign holidays are back on the market is flooded and I can pick up a bargain.

£45-50k is crazy money isn’t it.

Fordian · 19/08/2021 15:25

I expect prices will fall. Especially after this rather damp and uninspiring UK summer!

We're hanging out, too!

It is I know! But it seems the only way to get one cheaper is to go for a much much older one

We sold a tent this year for more than we paid for it second hand 8 years ago.

Other campers we know are expecting next year to be a good year for nearly new equipment.

GenderApostatemk2 · 19/08/2021 15:37

Motor homes keep their value plus the market for them keeps growing.
You can pay £20k+ for a 1990’s model.

We’ve been interested in getting one for years but they are just too pricey.
There seem to be so many on the roads plus Day vans that cost £25k+, I would love to know how people afford them.

Have to admit, this is what we're thinking is going to happen too. We converted a minibus into a camper van a few years ago, but, foolishly let it go a couple of years ago when the new MOT rules came in and it would have cost a lot (at the time) to maintain as it was a diesel. We're hoping to be able to get something better in year or 2 when, I think, many people will have got bored with the idea of holidaying in this way. I can live in hope, anyway!
Essentialironingwater · 19/08/2021 15:38

We are also holding out for people to bugger off back to Marbella so we can get a camper. If they don't fall, fine, but I do think it's worth a punt to wait yes!

AmazinglyGraceless · 19/08/2021 15:39

Totally, totally different level here 😂😂 but similar issue. We want to buy a camping trailer. A really good, large one that will hold all our camping gear for storage and transport and last us years.

We've also found prices seem to have a shot up though so are holding back, assuming (hoping) prices will come down with a bump when everyone gets over the staycation trend next year.

QOFE · 19/08/2021 15:39

My converted van was £2k about 4 years ago but I was told the other day that despite 26 years old and very basic (no plumbing/water for example) it would sell for £5k now Shock

Bells3032 · 19/08/2021 15:39

One of the major issues with any car/auto prices is that there's currently a shortage of semiconductors: www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/30/global-semiconductor-shortage-affecting-car-production-in-china-and-japan

So depends if they get their act together or not

Marshy86 · 19/08/2021 15:42

At the minute with shipping prices and cost of raw materials I doubt prices will be coming down soon. The camping trade prices will be going up again next year.

The UK weather has no bearing on things, as many motorhomers head to Europe.

Sales of motorhomes have gone through the roof, so I'm guessing that there will be a glut of second hand MHs for sale shortly, as people realise it's not for them.

Witchinthesticks · 19/08/2021 15:49

I know they keep their value, but it’s been reported that they’ve massively shot up in prices due to demand.
Trouble is I’m not sure how much is normal!

I suppose I was expecting about 15k not 50k! Grin

I think they'll do up too, along with garden furniture, hot tubs etc. Everyone is looking to do the same thing.

TheSloaneRanger · 19/08/2021 15:59

*go not do 🙄

Well that’s not what I wanted to hear….. I can’t justify a motorhome that costs more than an actual home!

Cactuslockdown · 19/08/2021 16:06

They’ve always been super expensive… feels like as I’ve earned more their price has increased so I still can’t afford one Sad

Witchinthesticks · 19/08/2021 16:16

I suppose camping has been a bit trendy for a while, even before COVID, what with ‘glamping’ and all that. The sites have got busier and busier over the last few years.

I have been binge watching minivan conversion videos on Youtube. I am thinking about a used VW Caddy or similar and doing a no build conversion. Hoping to get that for well under £10K £5K

TheSloaneRanger · 19/08/2021 16:23

@Witchinthesticks, let's hope I'm wrong

Witchinthesticks · 19/08/2021 16:38

A conversion sounds like a great idea if you have the skills.

MrsRussell · 19/08/2021 16:39

We're actually looking to sell ours - we're just not getting the use of it.... £20k second hand (van conversion from a dealer) but not sure if we'll get anything like that for it :-(

Givemebackmylilo · 19/08/2021 16:42

We recently sold ours for exactly the same price we bought it 6 years ago despite racking up the miles

Prices have gone up a ridiculous amount

bizboz · 19/08/2021 16:44

We are hoping to get one too. I'm thinking after the crappy weather in the UK this year people might want to sell.
