My dh has been a fan of a ‘famous’ (doesn’t seem to be extremely well known but loved in certain circles) singer since he was a teenager and has gone to see her with his mates a few times in the past, although I think she has retired now (?)
I won’t be naming her because I don’t want a fighr or for any arguments, just want to see if I am being unreasonable.
I’m not so keen on her music but today he insisted on me watching some of a live recording of one of her concerts.
I immediately noticed how thin she was and how her hair was quite matted, and that she was more moaning the words as she sang, as if she was almost struggling or drugged.Sad

She seemed more okay at first just stood on stage with a bit of dancing but as it went on she started crawling on the floor, heavily breathing, making odd squeal noises into the microphone, spinning in circles, even spitting at the audience at one point. Shock she honestly looked really ill in my eyes and I told dh that it seemed quite exploitative to have put this woman on a stage for everybody to watch her.
According to dh it was just ‘like that back then’ and this is how she was..🤔.
The recording was from around the early 80s (i’ll have to ask dh) but this is surely not normal for the time??
I was only a little girl myself so I wouldn’t know Sad
Am I being unreasonable to think this wasn’t normal for the time??

I know IABU to ask but was it Patti Smith?
I think it makes a difference who the singer actually was.

Elainereadsapage · 19/08/2021 14:04

Yes it was her. I’ll ask for the recording

Courtney Love?

It depends who it was. Amy Winehouse was exploited towards the end of her career, but some women are just bad ass rock stars and do whatever mad shit they want to

Elainereadsapage · 19/08/2021 14:07

It was Patti Smith, mind you I don’t know batshit about her but from this video alone that we watched ( only short clips) I feel like she was quite unwell. In a saddening Amy Winehouse type way. Sad

lol

Depends on who she was, I assume from the spitting she was punk? In which case not unusual. I get really pissed off with the world watching stuff from the 70s and before and being horrified at what went on and trying to attach the 'wokeness' (for want of a better word) of today to it. Yes, a lot of it was shit, I spent my first decade at work being continually sexually harrassed, but that was the way it was. Personally I find the female stars of today gyrating in such skimpy clothes and in such a way that you can make out how many kids they've had far more offensive. In 30 years time that will be considered horrendous and the 30 year olds will shrug and say 'it just the way it was'.

Elainereadsapage · 19/08/2021 14:14

That’s true that i’m trying to attach my modern-day ideas to older stars. But it still just felt a bit wrong .

People would have felt like that at the time too. It's punk music, it's meant to be confronting. It's Patti Smith being Patti Smith

Elainereadsapage · 19/08/2021 14:33

That makes sense, if it was her motive then sure I completely understand it. But if you watch the clip she seemed more than just ‘being punk’. It’s almost like she was drugged or hallucinating? Sad

She apparently wasn't much of a fiend in that respect

BornToBeWilde · 19/08/2021 14:50

She looks amazing, such a breath of fresh air compared to most of today's nonsense.

Tanith · 19/08/2021 14:55

I think she fell off a high stage and broke her neck in the late 70s. So she could have been on strong painkillers?
