To think this is bloody daft of the hotel?

I’ve booked a hotel for Friday night until Monday morning. Unfortunately due to childcare issues I found out today that I won’t be able to get there until Saturday morning now. It’s all been prepaid for and as it’s less than 7 days before the booking it’s completely non-refundable and can’t be rearranged.

I’m not too fussed about it being non-refundable, totally understand they probably wouldn’t be able to fill the room again at short notice. Anyway, I phone the hotel to let them know that I do still want the booking but that I won’t be arriving until about 9.30ish on the Saturday rather than the Friday afternoon as originally planned. Receptionist on phone says ‘that’s fine, thanks for letting us know. Just so you know you’re welcome to use the facilities but your room won’t be available until check in at 3pm.” I reiterate that I’ve already paid for the room (and breakfast and dinner which I won’t be having either) from Friday so it should be available when I get there at 9.30. Again “sorry, no but we can’t allow early check in under any circumstances at the moment. We’re totally fully booked and the cleaners just can’t get the rooms ready before this.”

I ask to speak to someone else as I assume she’s possibly new or young or thick as mince. She passes me over to another woman but I hear her say “can you speak to this lady, she won’t understand why she can’t check in at 9.30am”. I explain the situation again. New lady replies with “I empathise with your situation but as we are fully booked we simply can’t allow you to check in nearly 6 hours early”. I tell her that it’s not 6 hours early, it’s 18 hours late. Im booked from the Friday night. I’m paying for the Friday night but I can’t get there until Saturday morning. I’ve paid £145 for a room, dinner and breakfast and none of it will be used. If I was arriving on time, I would be able to return to my room at 9.30am if I chose to do so. She tell me that I'm not arriving on time though so the room won’t be ready until 3pm Confused.

I ask if there’s a manager that I can email, or a head office as this is just bonkers. She gives me an email address. I write a very calm, concise email explaining that I’ll be getting there at 9.30 the day after I’m due to arrive. I’ve just had an email back (from the reception again) telling me that my room will be ready at 3pm and they hope I enjoy my stay.

How do I resolve this? They’re all mad. Aren’t they? I’m not going crazy in thinking I should be allowed in the room when I get there am I? It should be ready for 3pm on Friday so will still be ready at 9.30 on Saturday, surely?

That's crazy.

Are you near the hotel? Can you check in Friday, go home and return the Saturday?

Janaih · 18/08/2021 17:28

Omg that's the kind of thing that set Michael Douglas off in falling down.
Really hope you can get it sorted.

Neolara · 18/08/2021 17:28

You're not mad. They are. That is spectacularly poor customer service. I assume they will be renting out the room to someone else and that is why you can only access the room at 3pm. Can you check terms and.conditions?

WrongKindOfFace · 18/08/2021 17:28

They’re going to resell your room which is why they’re saying you can’t have it before 3pm. I would also be raging.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 18/08/2021 17:30

There's no arguing with stupid!
Have you tried Twitter?

SeasonFinale · 18/08/2021 17:32

Message and say. That's fine I expect my room that I am paying for to be ready for me at 3pm on Friday. Thank you.

Then turn up and say here I am late for my room.

JurassicPark101 · 18/08/2021 17:32

It’s a good 2 hour drive from me so can’t get there to check in, unfortunately. I don’t know if they are reselling the room, they genuinely just didn’t seem to understand my explanation, it was bizarre.

I booked it through booking.com. It just says that payment is taken 7 days before and from that point onwards it is non-transferable and non-refundable.

I shouldn’t have bothered phoning at all. I only did it because I was worried they’d think I didn’t want the booking and cancel it

Yes there might be small print that says you need to check in before midnight or something.

DysmalRadius · 18/08/2021 17:33

Have you suggested that they either let you into your room in the morning or refund you for the night you aren't staying?

JurassicPark101 · 18/08/2021 17:33

Their Twitter account hasn’t been used since 2016, I don’t think that would work sadly.

I work in a hotel and in this situation the computer would put you as a "no show" if you've not checked in by midnight however as you have called up, we put a note on the booking and let the Computer know that you are a late check in.
Your room that you've booked would be ready for you as of the Friday.

I would call again and not mention calling before and just say you're giving them a courtesy call to let them know you'll be arriving late however still definitely will be coming.

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2021 17:34

Just ring them back and tell them you'll be checking in on the Friday

They can't turn you away on the Saturday

I agree it's crazy though

Lovelybottom · 18/08/2021 17:35

They are absolutely mad and I would also tell them you will be checking in late on the Friday so they don't resell your room.

JustMoved123 · 18/08/2021 17:36

Just say you’ve changed your mind and you will arrive late on Friday instead! That’s ridiculous of them unless they will refund Friday night.

Gazelda · 18/08/2021 17:36

That's hilarious! But frustrating for you. I wonder what would happen if you rocked up for breakfast?

RobinPenguins · 18/08/2021 17:38

You’re not mad at all. The only way this makes any sense is that they’re going to resell the room - in which case they should give you a refund for the Friday night.

FinallyHere · 18/08/2021 17:42

They might be reselling the room, or perhaps the staff are counting on using it because they know you won't be using it on Friday night. It will then be serviced and ready for you on Saturday.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 18/08/2021 17:42

As PP said, they're gonna resell and make double the money.
I would call and say you're arriving Friday then call very late Friday evening and say you got stuck at work. It doesn't necessarily fix your problem for Saturday, unless they then decide that of course you can check in to your ready and clean room, but at least it prevents them from getting double the money on Friday. But then I'm a petty bitch 😂

Ziggerty · 18/08/2021 17:46

You reply and tell them if they are unable to fulfil your contract of a room etc available from the Friday as you wish it to be then you will gladly accept the refund for that night.

AuntieDolly · 18/08/2021 17:46

Can you check in online?

BruceAndNosh · 18/08/2021 17:50

Yes, say you will be arriving at 11.30pm on Friday.
Then call at 11.40pm to say you're stuck in a godawful traffic jam but hope to get there in time for a late breakfast

Slothkin · 18/08/2021 17:51

I had similar insanity when trying to book rooms for our CEO to check straight in after his flight arriving in the early hours of the morning - they absolutely want to sell on the room you’ve paid for unless you’re in possession, it’s a nightmare! If it’s a Travelodge or Premier Inn I think you can check in online to secure the room via the website.

Grinch48 · 18/08/2021 17:51

Do you know anyone near the hotel that could check in for you as your other guest 😂
I’ve often checked in first and then my DH check in much later

KidneyBeans · 18/08/2021 17:52

Ask them why they're planning to re-sell the room you've booked and paid for?

If they aren't then ask them what is the barrier to you checking in early
If they are then call them out on it

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 18/08/2021 17:53

Oh no way! They either let you check in when you arrive or refund you the night!!
