Blonde box dyes. What's the point in them when they don't work whatsoever?? Am I missing a trick or are they nothing but a waste of money? The results picture on the back says light brown hair will be turned a lovely blonde shade within 30 minutes. What a load of rubbish.

Do they only work on already blonde hair? If so, why do they lie about the expected results on the box?? If these blonde box dyes have worked for you on your light brown hair please enlighten me

I have dark blonde hair and a lighter blonde box dye has absolutely turned my hair a lot lighter. Ruined the condition though, so I don't do it anymore. I also didn't like that it went brassy. Sticking to my natural colour now.

Soberfutures · 15/08/2021 13:27

It does honestly depend in your natural colour. Most will only lift 1 or 2 shades and depending on the tones in your hair it will need a bleach pre lightner.
And even then it does take time to get a light blonde. That is why salons will explain it takes a few sitting
But I agree it is misleading.

I think they’re better if you’re already blonde and maintaining it or want a slight shade change, but if you need to go blonde from brunette in the first place then it’s best to go to salon.

It takes 3 box dyes and a toner to make my hair look vaguely the colour I would like. 1 blonde box dye takes it to a red/orange shade, 2nd to an orange/brassy yellow shade and 3rd to a yellow shade. I am careful not to do the roots too much though. Then toner.

I don't do it anymore- terrible for your hair.

WitchBaby · 15/08/2021 13:29

I have to leave mine on for the maximum time allowed (sometimes longer - naughty) but they do work.

GarnetsandRubies · 15/08/2021 13:31

What colour is your natural hair @WitchBaby ?

This is the dye I used with the expected results. My hair hasn't changed a single bit

My hair is the sort of mousy that looks light-mid brown but is technically dark ash blonde. Box dyes (and indeed sun-in) worked fine, although the box dyes did go brassy, but maybe there's a difference between how very dark blonde and light/mid brown reacts to the dye. My hair bleaches blonde easily with sunshine, too.

DaisyWaldron · 15/08/2021 13:47

I only ever tried lightening mine by a couple of shades, though. For that shade, I'd expect to have to serious pre-lightening first.

dementedpixie · 15/08/2021 13:50

We're yiubsuing it in natural hair that hadn't been coloured before? Box dyes don't normally lighten hair very much and you'd normally need to buy a separate bleach to lighten it first

SallyDontTouchThatPie · 15/08/2021 13:56

I have had my mid blonde hair lifted to ash blonde, but it requires Olaplex and a high volume lift (30 I think - that's the bleach part) and my hairdressers uses Guy Tang hair products (he has a YouTube channel, mainly does hair for models)

The basics are you cannot lift the hair more than 1-2 shades with a box bleach, it needs a "pre-lightener" first which is basically bleach to remove the brown colour from your hair and then a colour put on to colour the now lightened hair.

If you can afford it use a mobile hairdresser which will be cheaper than a salon based hairdresser. To be honest you will never get a great hair colour from a box dye.

SallyDontTouchThatPie · 15/08/2021 13:57

I am not a hairdresser but brown hair has a red undertone, the minute you start to bleach it it will go brassy, that is why there are toners. YouTube is full of videos explaining bleach/toners etc.
