To point out there's a Sunday episode of The Archers tonight for the first time in nearly 18 months?

Archers I know I'm not being unreasonable, btw! This is just to alert any Archers listener who's missed it that for the first time since last spring there's a Sunday episode of The Archers tonight (obviously will be available on catch up if you can't listen live, and omnibus will be a bit longer next Sunday). Episodes now going out on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. No word yet on when we might get our Friday episode back.

Having said all of that, it's the summer fete tonight, with Dunk the Vicar, a scarecrow competition and a celebrity appearance Hmm, so likely to be a bit toecurling, unless Drunk Alice commandeers the megaphone and broadcasts a few inconvenient truths to the assembled villagers. Sadly, not likely.

Feel free to join us on our long-running Archers discussion threads over in Radio Addicts any time. Lots of people dip in and out, and we believe there are a lot of you out there lurking but not posting. All welcome!

(We are very proud to have our own MN emoji - demonstrated above.)

Thanks for the heads up, I wasn't aware of this.

🎉🎉🎉🎉

VaguelyInteresting · 15/08/2021 07:20

I only listen to the omnibus on a Sunday morning these days (kept missing midweek because dinner/Bath/bed routine) and THOUGHT it had been shorter- didn’t realise we’d lost two eps a week?! Grin

ThymeafterThyme · 15/08/2021 07:21

YANBU - you are performing a public service Smile

If this was Emmerdale they'd use the large gathering at the fete to kill off a number of tiresome characters. I'd be happy with just Pip meeting a sticky end Grin

newnortherner111 · 15/08/2021 07:25

YANBU and I have now got the theme tune in my head!!!

ThinWomansBrain · 15/08/2021 07:27

The thread appears to be a heated discussion about whether or not something is/was a spoiler rather than the program itself?
I'd heard a trailer for Sunday on R4, but thanks for the heads up.
Surprised they've reintroduced Sundays rather than Fridays TBH

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2021 07:29

Paying close attention then, @VaguelyInteresting! Grin It's been very hit and miss recently. Some episodes I can scarcely remember a few minutes later what happened. It's all a step up from the monologues anyway.

If only, @ThymeafterThyme, if only! There was a storyline about sinkholes years ago that had promise, but they didn't use it as many of us hoped and now it all seems to have gone away.

I didn't enable voting, but it looks as if you get a vote if you don't specifically say you don't want one. Ho hum.

Whoop, whoop, whoop! This is fabulous news. Thank you for the heads up! 😃

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2021 07:31

That will pass, @ThinWomansBrain (intriguing username!). Probably a bit more discussion about the programme itself after the omnibus later this morning.

I stopped listening to The Archers when they were doing those one actor episodes during lockdown. I do sort of miss it. Have Chris and Alice decided whether they want kids or not?

VaguelyInteresting · 15/08/2021 07:36

A small anecdote to make archers fans smile

I came downstairs last week to find my 4 year old really railing at the Google nest device - he was clearly asking for something and GN couldn’t understand- so he’s shouting and the GN is making mad suggestions “do you want to hear the weather in Cairo?” sort of stuff and it was all getting heated but sort of ridiculous because DS is 4 and was shouting into it with his hands on his hips not looking unlike his 54 year old father.

Anyway I asked him what he wanted and he turns to me in high dudgeon “ I want Archie on the Bus!” He says, really exasperated.

I had never heard this title, but assumed it was a nursery song - so asked him to sing it. He looked at me like I was an absolute idiot “no! It’s not a song! Archie on the bus. ARCHIE ON THE BUS”

Suddenly it hit me.

“DS” I say “do you mean the archers omnibus?”

“Yes!” He says “I missed it last week because I was at grandmas!” Grin

[Rubs hands]

In brief, @CounsellorTroi, Alice has descended into alcoholism and won't/can't accept any help. Along the way she found out she was pregnant (unplanned). Chris was delighted but eventually she had to admit to Chris she had drunk a lot in the early stages of the pregnancy and was struggling not to to drink in the middle stages. She went to detox for a couple of weeks and gave birth to an apparently healthy baby girl called Martha. Unfortunately she then relapsed and it's been one long nightmare ever since. Chris and Martha are living with Neil and Susan and Alice has gone to rehab, checked out, come home and caused havoc by saying some dreadful things to her loved ones, and has now disappeared.

All rather grim, but actually one of the better storylines at the moment, as it has been signposted for years, so is not out of character.

@VaguelyInteresting, Grin

He sounds like a great character! I've utterly failed to get either of my children interested in TA. They're only in their late 20s so there's time yet. [manic gleam]

One of mine listens sort of. I need to catch up two weeks when I get home.

AgentJohnson · 15/08/2021 08:35

It’s probably very shallow of me to say but it’s AIBU so what the hell, personally out of all the Corona related measures, the missing Sunday and Friday episodes had the greater impact on me Hell, even having a teen doing online classes had its upsides.

Thanks for the update and the Archers thread tip, I’ll see you over there!

Badabingbadabum · 15/08/2021 08:39

Excellent! I've really missed the Sunday one, especially missing it and catching up at some point on monday.

That's brilliant. You should have called in to Liza Tarbuck on Radio 2 yesterday evening. She was asking for stories like that.

I know what you mean, the whole world was falling apart and the Archers wobbling with it really shook me up. I was relieved when the monologues started up as a little bit of returning 'normality', thin pickings though they were.

I love the Fete episodes as I live in Archerland (in the shadow of Bredon Hill, which by SOME accounts is "Lakey Hill" where you can't move for weekly fetes in summer; we even enter a few Flower and Produce Shows with a cake or several.

I loved the 'Fete worse than Death' title that briefly appeared on here for a duplicate Archers thread! Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2021 09:05

@AgentJohnson, it was great! Wish I'd thought of it. Maybe the next thread title. I'm a townie and had been assuming mid-August was a ludicrous time for a fete, but sounds as if I was wrong.

I take my hat off to the posters who come up with the clever thread titles. However, my all time favourite was

"The Archers: we listen so you don't have to"

Summed it up brilliantly Grin

TeenMinusTests · 15/08/2021 11:01

YANBU.
For me The Archers going AWOL during lockdown was one of the things that helped destabilise my world. I've been listening for 50 years, except through the Rob/Helen saga when I just couldn't.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2021 13:48

BUMP for the lucky listeners who had a lie in!

I'm hoping Ruiairi* comes back for a tearful reunion with Jenny. Yes I know he's only just left but I'm not coping well with the manner of his leaving. Don't anyone dare suggest it's not real!
