Hairwashing

Just seeking confirmation that I'm not weird...

I have long hair which I wash upside down by bending over the bath and using the showerhead. Seems practical to me, for combing the conditioner through etc.

My mother (who has short hair) reckons I am extremely eccentric to do it this way, and wonders why I can't wash it standing up in the shower 'like everyone else does'

(my mother is fond of pointing out ways in which I am 'not like all the normal people')

I generally wear my eccentricity with pride, but just out of interest, and for a little validation, how weird am I for washing my hair like this?

OP posts:

Has someone totally misread the word ‘eccentricity’?! Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/08/2021 15:59

Crikey. It sounds as if you either have a difficult relationship with your mother or are a very sensitive person. The question is first world stuff and your reaction to a few comments is surprising.

I think they must have! Grin

It's not weird OP (especially since you don't have a shower).

I wash my hair the same way, as I don't have an actual shower fitting on the wall, just taps with a shower attachment.

Zaragirl84 · 12/08/2021 16:05

It's not eccentric but it does seem more difficult to wash your hair bent over the bath than just standing in the shower. But you don't have a shower so that's surely a mute point.

Does your mother know you don't actually have a shower?

Gingernaut · 12/08/2021 16:05

I have short hair and tend to wash it in the shower.

However, if my hair is dry and I'm 'treating' it with a thick conditioner, then I rinse it out over the bath as the shower tray becomes too slick to safely stand on, even with a mat.

I would use a bath to dye my hair too.

YANBU, your mother is weird.

XenoBitch · 12/08/2021 16:08

Not odd at all. This is how I wash my hair too. My reason though is that I can't have water falling onto my face (makes me panic!).

QueenBee52 · 12/08/2021 16:10

🤣😂

sincere apologies ..

I was laughing at the turn of tone on the thread..

not your fear of water on your face.. Im so sorry if it appeared as such ☹️🌸

knittingaddict · 12/08/2021 16:12

Have I understood you op? You wash your hair over the bath, this is eccentric to you, your mum thinks you should wash your hair in the shower like everyone else, but you don't have a shower? Whats's eccentric about washing your hair over the bath if you don't have a shower? Does your mum know you don't have a shower? I'm very confused.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 12/08/2021 16:12

That's not what you said OP. And what has ethnicity got to do with any of this

Nothing, she said eccentricity, not ethnicity.

Yes, that's it!

What did you actually mean op?

Killahangilion · 12/08/2021 16:13

Is your mum on a water meter? That woule make a difference to how reasonable or not, you’re being.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/08/2021 16:15

I don't think you are being unreasonable to wash your hair whichever way you want to.

I do think it's odd though that your mum is asking you why you don't wash it in the shower when she presumably knows you don't have a shower!

And as you say that she doesn't have a bath, then presumably you are washing it in the shower at her house?

DarlingFell · 12/08/2021 16:18

You win the award for the weirdest thread on there today, and there have been some strong contenders. You get extra points for flouncing.

FYI Vivienne Westwood is eccentric. Washing your hair over the bath isn't.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2021 16:21

Yes, that's it!

She probably meant exactly what she said - eccentricity 🤷‍♀️

Not at all. I used to do that all the time when there wasn't time for a full shower. Now I just shower because I love showers, but yeah. Normal.

Gotta love mums who think that telling you you aren't normal is a fun thing, though. Baffling, when the more out-of-touch they become the less they even know what 'normal' is or what 'everyone's' doing. I was brought up with long lectures of what 'everyone' did or thought and how I was 'so weird'. I just stopped visiting the woman, life's much more pleasant.

ArabeIIaFigg · 12/08/2021 16:21

Washing your hair upside down does reduce the amount you find stuck in your bum crack.

Or so I’ve heard.

Franticbutterfly · 12/08/2021 16:21

I find that if you do it your way you get a better wash. I think that standing washing, unless you pay particular focused attention to the area, the bit at the back between the ears can stay greasy at the roots. I think your way is better, although I more or less do it your mums way.

spooney21 · 12/08/2021 16:36

I have washed it over the bath with a shower head if I'm a rush, or no full shower available but I find my hair around my hairline doesn't get washed properly. If I had the choice (and time) always in the shower.

RickJames · 12/08/2021 16:44

@ArabeIIaFigg

That's why I like a good 'over the bath-side hairwash'. My bum crack fills up with long hair and I don't like it at all Grin

TangledUp789 · 12/08/2021 16:48

I’ve always washed my hair by kneeling over the bath tub and using the shower head. I just can’t stand the feeling of water running all over my face. I can’t put my head underwater when swimming or in the bath either. It probably is a bit weird, but I’m not really worried about that!

MiddlesexGirl · 12/08/2021 16:52

Perfectly normal. I don't even use a shower attachment; it's easy enough to get my head under the taps. Much more economical of time and I'd say water too as all the water is going on the hair.
I always brush my hair before I wash it so it doesn't get knotty.

Lily78123 · 12/08/2021 16:53

Normal

PickAChew · 12/08/2021 16:57

I wash mine over the bath. I detangle it when I wash it and the conditioner I use is so slippery that it's fucking lethal, in the shower.
