Self service check outs

Generalpost · 11/08/2021 13:24

I normally get a home delivery from the super Market. But was not able to.

I was going to aldi but I actually need a trolley full and now every check out apart from 1 is self service. You can't even use a trolley at them check outs. Because the machine starts shouting at you to put the item in the packing area. And of course you can't put a full trolley on the packing area. It's a very busy as well so having one staffed checkout is madness. Just having a rant really .

What hell is this? Our Aldi have no self service checkouts and I hope it stays that way. Surely this will be counterproductive - their staff are so fast putting a shop through the checkout but I can imagine individual shoppers being incredibly slow if they have more than two or three things, holding everybody up and causing havoc.

Why don't you put the items on one at a time then? Or am I missing something here?

reprehensibleme · 11/08/2021 13:31

Fortunes, you can't do that with self service scan because the area where you place items after scanning 'weighs' the items and has a running total - if you remove an item from that area it won't let you continue.

If you mean scan and pay for each item one at a time, it would take hours to put through a trolley load......Grin

You can remove bags from the bagging area, it just recalibrates. When they were first introduced it would need a staff member to authorise the change, but not now.

I don't agree with automation as it is replacing workers, but I don't think it's a hassle to use.

The self serve in Aldi/Lidl are very small compared to other supermarkets. You can't get a full trolley on the packing bit and not all of them will let you take stuff off. The Staff have been told to not authorise doing this in areas were shoplifting is high.

Yes it will. I work in a supermarket and you can move things off the self scan, you just have to do it at the right time.

With our self scans you scan the item and when you put the item in the weighing/packing area the lights on the scanner go red momentarily while it works out the weight and prepares for the next item. When they go back to green, you can either scan the next item or move the bag/items off the scale at which point the scanner will go red again while it recalibrates. As long as you don't try to scan/move stuff round while the scanner is on red then you can move things off the packing area as much as you like.
