to think a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel unnecessary?

Apparently, Brian May stated on instagram live that a sequel might be in the works despite last year saying they didn't think there was enough for a second movie.
www.nme.com/news/film/brian-may-bohemian-rhapsody-sequel-3014477
When Sacha Baron-Cohen had said they had fallen out because Brian wanted the movie to focus on Queen as a whole and not just Freddie (so Freddie dying half way through and the band going from strength to strength) Brian denied it and called him an arse.
I liked Rami Malek and the film was correct to finish at Live Aid. But as many said at the time, the film was very much whitewashed in terms of Freddie's joie de vivre and personal life (which SBC had wanted to focus on more).
Unless the film helps awareness of AIDS like Years and Years did, then not sure a sequel is going to bring much. I loved the innuendo album and Show must go on still brings me to tears.
But not sure 85-91 has enough, if they were to finish on the concert for Aids with someone playing George Michael. And if they were to do further e.g. ending with Brian May on the roof of Buckingham Palace or showing Adam Lambert doing the tribute band shtick (and I like Adam Lambert, it's not personal) I think it likely most will want to eye-roll or think it an ego exercise/cashing in/milking it now.

What do the Queen fans among you think?

I liked the film, but enough now!

SequinsandStiIettos · 09/08/2021 20:17

I voted I was NBU Grin Wink
I could get more behind a Rocketman 2 I think, because Elton has had so much more output. Even then, because of privacy for his kids and marriage and that injunction not sure how a script would go but that would make more sense to me... (would be hilarious if Taron had to play himself as well as Elton, were Kingsman 2 to cameo).
While I am about it, Taron wuz robbed. He deserved an oscar more than Rami, given his amazing singing throughout that biopic. He didn't even get a nomination that year Sad as it was a competitive category...
Winner: Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
Antonio Banderas - Pain and Glory
Leonardo DiCaprio - Once Upon A Time in Hollywood
Adam Driver - Marriage Story
Jonathan Pryce - The Two Popes

I suppose it's tempting for the film makers to think 'don't stop me now' after the end of the first one. Maybe the studio is under pressure to deliver another big film and they have decided that the show must go on. It seems like Sacha Baron-Cohen thought they only needed one, visions can be different though and for Brian May it's easy to think 'I want it all'

Ok, I'm done now.

Ladywinesalot · 09/08/2021 20:21

Yeah the first film was amazing anything worse, what you wanna see Freddie’s last words?

Queen went out in a high in the first film. Leave it at that

the80sweregreat · 09/08/2021 20:27

The Queen ' brand' can't need the money of another film surely?
They must be loaded!
(I'd go and see ' Rocketman 2 if they ever made that one, but that injunction would not be mentioned I bet!)

Ha! Far too on the nose never given Mamma Mia 2: here we go again
Oh my God, can you imagine? Bohemian Rhapsody 2: we are the champions.
I do wonder whether it would have been Rami vs Elton, had the films coincided. That year was also fairly competitive though...Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe and Viggo Mortensen (I do like the latter but just not in that film particularly).
Queen do still sell loads of records though. Inducted in Hall of Fame 2001. Played Sun City back in the day but won't ever play Glasto because badgers. Confused

I wondered why they didn't play Glastonbury!

SquirryTheSquirrel · 09/08/2021 20:35

There's more to tell, as you say, because the film ended in 1985 but Freddie lived until 1991. Focusing more on the other Queen members would be a good approach rather than trying to spin out 6 years for 2 hours - perhaps do this retrospectively, the early days from Brian May's point of view for instance. I really enjoyed the first film so would definitely watch a sequel.

I liked Rocket Man too although I'm not much of an Elton John fan - it was interesting to learn about his life. A sequel could be good but as he has DC now it would need to be balanced with their privacy if covering the more recent period.

SequinsandStiIettos · 09/08/2021 20:41

Yes, it will be 30 years this November. A sequel wouldn't capture the Chinese market - allegedly they cut out all references to hmosexuality and AIDS in the first one.

I reckon it could work if the collaboration with Montserrat Caballe was a big theme. That's a great story and the snippets of them together on YouTube are are mesmerising. Would also be better if they undid the ending of film 1 where the other band members were told he was HIV+ just before Live Aid to set up any sequel, though.

But I'd rather see a Kapadia style movie documentary. I found the BR reconstructions with the other band members staring adoringly at Freddy instead of getting on with performing for the crowd a bit much.

PolaDeVeboise · 09/08/2021 20:44

I wasn't a great fan of the film - thought Rami Malek was 'playing a part' all the way through. Appreciate I'm in the minority though.

Haven't seen Rocketman.

AFS1 · 09/08/2021 20:45

I can’t watch Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw it once but won’t rewatch it. I thought Rami Malek was absolutely stunning as Freddie, but the narcissistic and highly inaccurate narrative provided by May and Taylor under the pretence of it being biographical irritates me too much to just enjoy the film.

If May and Taylor remained as involved in the production of a sequel as they did with the first one, I fear it would be yet more of the same.

I'm with you on that. It feels like uncanny valley animation. Also thought RM came across as smug in a way that FM somehow should have but didn't.
the80sweregreat · 09/08/2021 20:52

Brian May is an odd bod . They played a new song of his on radio two the other day and it was awful and trying to be early Queen.
He is so intelligent and articulate and a wonderful musician, but he also seems to just live in the past where Queen is concerned ; I don't feel he has moved on at all since Freddie died and still hankers after the old days. Just my opinion here , I just wished he let it all go!

SquirryTheSquirrel · 09/08/2021 20:55

I much prefer early and late Queen - they sort of dipped in my opinion after Bohemian Rhapsody and didn't come back up again until The Miracle. The middle stuff is OK, just not as stunning as the rest.

EishetChayil · 09/08/2021 21:44

I thought you meant a sequel to the song!

"Mamaaaaaa, I just killed another man..."

Valeriekat · 09/08/2021 22:14

"Mamaaaaaa, I just killed another man..."
Now that made me laugh out loud!
Days of our lives always makes me cry!
Early Queen were FABULOUS. The band were absolutely beautiful to look at (apart from JD who was modestly getting on with his own thing).

Yes, if there has to be a sequel, then the original video to this ought to be in the credits in a little box against black so Freddie's final words to fans ''I still love you'' has the final say.
Or Rami Malek is seen filming the video but 3/4 of the way through, it switches to the real thing so you have Freddie on screen then cue credits.

maggienolia · 10/08/2021 04:38

I have to say I think that JD did the right thing leaving before it took off as a media circus.
Brian and Roger need to let it go now and move on.

Valeriekat · 10/08/2021 11:03
