All clear following vasectomy

FeeFeeS · 09/08/2021 17:21

Ok so my dh had a vasectomy in March. We have 2 dc and despite being very careful with contraception, or so we thought, I found out I was pregnant. I won’t go into a lot of detail as it still haunts me but I couldn’t go through with the pregnancy and my dh agreed and accepted my decision. So, he decided that he wanted to get a vasectomy and it was a really quick process from referral to procedure. We haven’t done the deed since I found out i was pregnant as I was a mess and afterwards we both panicked that I would get pregnant again, so we both decided it wasn’t worth the risk. He provided a semen sample over a month ago now and we still haven’t received the results. He’s anxious it might not have worked and after months of erm, abstaining, we are both eager to resume that part of our relationship. AIBU to think that considering the lab had to analyse my dh’s sample within 4 hours it shouldn’t take over a month for us to get the results back?

You are unreasonable to have not chased it up.

Hankunamatata · 09/08/2021 17:26

Have you contacted the lab or dr?

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 09/08/2021 17:27

Sounds like a fuckup. Have you asked the doctors? Either the report has got stuck in transit at the test clinic or the doctors office, or the test clinic never delived and a new test will be required.

Mammyloveswine · 09/08/2021 17:27

I would chase it up.

FeeFeeS · 09/08/2021 17:28

Oh sorry I should’ve said that my dh phoned up the clinic last week. We were told the results wouldn’t come direct to us and they’d go to the gp as that’s who referred him. Dh phoned the Gp this morning and she still hasn’t had the results through.

I work in a lab and deal with these kind of samples, we usually have the results in two weeks. You can phone the lab directly, they won't be able to tell you the results but they can at least make sure they have been sent to the GP and to check if there has been an issue. Ask for Microbiology/Pathology. You should then be able to call the GP again and will be able to say you've checked with the lab and the results are definitely with them. Not that you should have to do any of this...!

FeeFeeS · 09/08/2021 17:44

Thank you I’ll tell my dh. He didn’t get put through to the lab when he phoned just one of the receptionists but she wasn’t particularly helpful.

OP posts:
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/08/2021 17:45

I would presume they've been lost and ask if the test can be repeated.

FeeFeeS · 09/08/2021 17:50

Oh I really hope not. My dh had to do his business at home first thing in the morning and have the sample delivered to the hospital within an hour so a really tight window. Thankfully it was when I was taking the dc to school so he had complete privacy but if he has to do it again I’ve no idea how he would get privacy not with 2 small dc off school for the summer lol.

markmichelle · 09/08/2021 18:02

He could take his container with him to the hospital and do 'it' in the toilet.
Then just hand it in.

FeeFeeS · 09/08/2021 18:04

Well it stated specifically on the letter that he can only attend the hospital to provide his sample if we live more than an hour away from the hospital. We are just under an hour away so they said because of covid restrictions it needs to be done at home. Oh the joys.

OP posts:
Nobloat21 · 09/08/2021 18:09

And be careful that when they say clear, that they mean clear. Dh's had trace sperm, or whatever it was, and was classed as clear. The receptionist advised me to get another sample done until it was actually zero, which is what we did. She was wrong to discuss the results with me, but I'm really glad she did.

scaevola · 09/08/2021 18:12

Marie Stopes can do post-vasectomy semen checks by post

It's part of the service if they did the vasectomy, £30 if they did not.

I am sorry you're getting bounced between lab and GP, and do hope someone can sort it out for you asap

FeeFeeS · 09/08/2021 18:20

Oh I didn’t realise they offered that service. It’s no big deal in the gran scheme of things I know, and what with covid, people with serious health conditions are waiting a long time for test results. I guess we are just being impatient to know either way if it has worked and we can finally relax in knowing that I won’t fall pregnant again.

Phone the lab or get it repeated and maybe put a party hat on it and bonk away?

FeeFeeS · 09/08/2021 18:31

Lol

I’d keep chasing up the lab OP, hope you get it sorted.

Hope the poster that suggested he go to the hospital and produce a sample in the toilet wasn’t serious- that’s a criminal offence.

I'm curious to how that would be a criminal offence?

Giving those samples can be a right headache. We also live under an hour from the hospital so had to do it at home and drive. The letter specifically asked that men do not do 'it' in the car park lol

EatsShoootsAndLeaves · 09/08/2021 20:49

My DH had to give two samples, a couple of months apart, and had a phonecall a few weeks after the second sample to confirm that the procedure was a success. I don't think we were given any results after the first sample, have you been given a date for the second deposit?

scammedmum29 · 09/08/2021 21:08

@oblada - my DH and I went through fertility to have children. He had to give samples and as we lived too far from the hospital he had to produce them on site, they had rooms specifically for this. We had letters from the hospital stating that men could not use toilets at the hospital to produce samples as it would be classed as lewd conduct and was a criminal offence.

Interesting. But i still can't see how it would be criminal conduct unless it became known/caused a disturbance in some way... But I do understand them discouraging from producing sample on site outside of the specific rooms etc lol

I know when my husband had it done they said they had changed to only one sample - if that was clear then they didn't recheck

Hi everyone just need some help. I did the clear blue early detection 5 days before my period and got these results which looked like a positive to me. The following day I did it again and it showed negative. Has this ever happened to anyone before? I'm due on in 4 days

When was your DH's vasectomy, and did he test all clear?

Spontaneous re-canalisation can happen, but it's pretty rare (most of the vasectomy 'fail' rate is attributed to abandoning other contraception before an all clear)

As noted above, Marie Stopes can do a semen test to see if his samples are still clear. If it is a failed procedure, he may need to have it re-done, and you should use other contraception again until he tests clear following the second procedure

(If this isn't a post-vasectomy question, then you might want to start a new thread, maybe in the Conception topic?)

dodette78 · 11/09/2021 02:22

Hi

Just wanted to say be very sure about the results.
Hubby had vasectomy. Over the following 11 months 4 samples were not quite clear, he had to provide a fresh one like yours.
The point is that they ask this if there are spermatozoa present but they want to assess the motility. Basically if they are not moving they give you what's called a "special clearance".

Fast forward 40 months and I got pregnant. Failure is not quite so rare as they state. It can also be due to the operator doing one vas in two places leaving the other intact.

Anyway I won't go into detail about the pregnancy but you absolutely can get samples analysed at random times and I now wish we knew that. It had never felt right- the way we got the clearance.

Hope you have better luck than us.
