I am half Greek Cypriot but I am told, pretty much all the time, that people find it hard to believe as I have fair skin and eyes. It honestly is starting to wear very thin now.

It actually sounds really petty now that I have written it down but it is something that people have said my whole life. Its just a bit boring now.

So AIBU?

Tell them genetics are weird and you could have any combination of genes.

Notimeforaname · 04/08/2021 14:44

Fuck these idiots. People just cant help themselves commenting on others appearance. Hmm
They're just ignorant.

Partner is foreign and quite tan. I am extremely fair,as white as can be.

Yet still any time they see me or a photo of me, his family will comment to my partner that ''she really needs to get out in the sun, doesnt look healthy '' or ''omg she's as bright as the sun hahahaha. Why will she not take some colour''??? Shaking their head in confusion Hmm

I don't know if they just think they're funny,or literally dont understand how genetics work.

Sorry op. Its very annoying. YANBU

How often are you having a conversation about this for it to bother you this much?

If you don't look 'different' people don't tend to question your heritage

It's because I have a very Greek surname, so when I have appointments etc. Its not something that I just casually bring up. It's always "Oh, wheres your surname from then?"

@WhateverHappenedToFayWray ahh that makes sense Smile

VladmirsPoutine · 04/08/2021 15:02

Yanbu. I'm mixed race and have had variations of these sorts of comments over the years. It's quite tedious but I don't think (most) people's intentions are malicious with these sort of comments.

Neondisco · 04/08/2021 15:05

Yeah that's annoying. It's like they have an expectation of how a Greek Cypriot should look and don't realise not everyone from there looks the stereotypical way.

Could you say something like actually not every one from my country of origin has dark skin? Or there are plenty of people who look like me.

Wolframhart · 04/08/2021 15:06

I spent my entire childhood with people questioning my last name. It is distinctly Italian and I appear very distinctly Scandinavian. After I hit puberty people even started hesitantly asking if I was married, even though I looked very young.

The simple explanation is that my father was adopted.

The questions stopped once I became an adult, I suspect because people just assume it’s a married name even though it’s not.

bananapumpkin · 04/08/2021 15:13

YANBU. One of my colleagues, who is mixed race but quite pale, was once told that "having a tan does not make you an ethnic minority"! It's just amazing what people will make completely unsolicited comments about.

magicstar1 · 04/08/2021 15:13

People always have to comment on something. My mother has lived in Ireland for nearly 50 years. Every day she has someone ask where in England she’s from....when she’s in England they ask her where in Ireland she’s from. Like you, it’s worn thin at this stage.

SharonasCorona · 04/08/2021 15:39

I get you, OP, I'm South Asian and very light skinned and I have had this all my life and it's wearing.

Liverbird77 · 04/08/2021 15:40

Meh. My kids are half Spanish and both have blond(e) hair. Can't get worked up about any comments, it's just general conversation.
Yanbu if it bothers you though.
