Rat stuck in Kitchen - help

SickOfRats · 03/08/2021 23:17

A bit of background - We have had a rat problem on and off for the past year since lockdown began. We've spent to the tune of 1k on pest control, a drain survey and traps/deterrents. We just haven't been able to get to the bottom of where they are coming in from but now reckon that it may be the kitchen extension roof due to identifying a few holes under some raised tiles. They have only ever been in the kitchen.

We decided it's best to get the whole reroof done. DH contacted over a dozen roofers in the past couple of days and only two answered(!), one said he is booked up until October and the other gave us a quote which was ridiculously high and therefore unaffordable for us. As a temporary measure DH and his friend climbed up onto the roof yesterday and secured chicken wire mesh over the holes. It seems to have worked... except now we have a trapped rat in the kitchen and it's currently sat on the washing machine. Luckily I don't need to go back in there for anything tonight but fucking hell, it's so brazen. I loudly banged on the living room/kitchen door (it has a panel window so have been watching it from that and behind the safety of the closed door), and despite the loud noise it didn't jump, run or even move. The little fucker just stared back unstartled.

DH has set a couple of snap traps (smeared with peanut butter), and there are some sticky boards behind the kickboards (rather pointless as they have never worked for us), but what else can we do? Any ideas welcome.

And please, no cries of the 'traps are so inhumane' - these fuckers have made our lives a misery for the past year. They've given my child anxiety, given me sleepless nights, and we have had to put up with this all lockdown whilst trapped inside the house. I've been unwell on and off past few months with unexplained cramps and vomiting. I can't help wondering if it's because of the rodents. I disinfect all surfaces etc every morning but it's impossible to know where they may have wandered about. I'm very clean, no food ever left out, no trash inside overnight, and no crumbs on the floor/on surfaces. Why tf do they keep coming back? And more urgently, how do I get this one out of my kitchen??

Do you know anyone with a terrier? They can usually see a rat off without an issue

DeathByWalkies · 03/08/2021 23:29

I was going to suggest a friend with a terrier too! Brazen rats don't last long with a terrier about!

StoneofDestiny · 03/08/2021 23:31

You've got to get exterminators in - where there is 1 there will be more! You can't do it yourself. As for the 1 in the kitchen - traps everywhere til you hear it 'snap'.

Greyingmumto3 · 03/08/2021 23:33

Our rat catcher recommended wine gums on the traps if you find the peanut butter isn’t working

toughdaay · 03/08/2021 23:33

What happens if you go into the kitchen, does it run away? Go in and open an outside door, it might just go out

SickOfRats · 03/08/2021 23:34

Sadly don't know anyone with a terrier! It's likely using the cavity wall to come down into kitchen from the roof, so it could easily run up into the roof if feeling threatened. The problem is roof is cladded with no access (stupid I know), a few months ago one died somewhere and the stench was horrendous. Took months to go away. For that reason I won't allow DH to put poison down.

@StoneotDestiny we have used two of the best rated pest control companies locally. One got rid of a rat and cemented up some external holes but I'm quite sure they were not the entry points because the problem continued after a few weeks. Second PC company was adamant drains were the issue so insisted we get a survey. Drains turned out perfectly fine.

@toughdaay it moved further down the washing machine with only its tail visible. I had the back door open during the day hoping it would escape but it didn't. Opening the door in the evening would just invite more rats, the area is full of them. It's out of control.

Sorry, I know this is serious, but you missed a trick with your thread title - it should have been "There's a Rat in the kitchen, what am i gonna do?".

I have no serious advice. Sorry, I hope you can get it sorted.

BaconMassive · 03/08/2021 23:42

There's a song here somewhere

That was going to be my suggestion too. Growing up in the country the cats used to bring rats in.
Snozzlemaid · 03/08/2021 23:44

Peanut butter on a trap worked pretty quickly for us, so hopefully that'll sort it for you.

Nannyamc · 03/08/2021 23:48

You need to find where they come in. I live in the country and have never seen one. We have an alert system and they can not stand the noise.
Cost very little and have them 30+

MySecretHistory · 03/08/2021 23:51

Chicken wire to block runs

Japanesejazz · 03/08/2021 23:53

If it’s that brazen
Do you know anyone with a rifle? Air rifle will see it off at that range
They give me the creeps and we have a farm so we’re always killing them
Even disposing the bodies makes me feel ill, but shooting them is very therapeutic
If anyone cries the poor rat, offer to send them a breeding pair

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 03/08/2021 23:55

Know anyone with a cat who is a bit of a mouser? They will also go for rats. Really sorry you are dealing with this

Alternatively an air rifle. Not taking the piss, it's how they dealt with them at an eco place a family member worked at.

SickOfRats · 03/08/2021 23:55

Will try wine gums!

Funny story - Two days ago the CF rat stole my bread (usually always in the bread bin but there were only two slices left and so left on top of the toaster. I NEVER usually do this). I came down in the morning to find the packet ripped open and not a crumb inside. The rat had taken the couple of slices as well as the top and bottom slice. I reached under the sink (opposite side of kitchen), for my cleaning things to find all the bread was there in a basket used for storing binliner rolls and cleaning cloths! It was all shredded and I think the rat had planned on nesting there. But honestly, we couldn't believe it. I keep switching from marvelling at how clever it is to galled at the absolute CFery.

What alert system @Nannyamc? Is it like the ultrasonic sound repellant?

@nannyamc which device do you recommend?
SickOfRats · 03/08/2021 23:59

@Japanesejazz nope don't know anyone with an air rifle, I clearly don't associate with the right kind of people. DC did offer me his nerf gun Grin I don't think that will quite cut it.

Yes I’m sorry too but that’s the first thing I thought of. I love a bit of UB40.

I hope you get rid of the mutant rats very soon.

SickOfRats · 04/08/2021 00:02

@hoorayforharoldlloyd

A few friends have cats but they don't live nearby. However locally MIL has one but she's old and useless (cat that is). I will find out though and maybe ask on FB without disclosing my embarrassing rat problem.

MorriseysGladioli · 04/08/2021 00:03

I wonder if there might be a "hire a terrior" type service in your area?

SickOfRats · 04/08/2021 00:04

Haha yes the UB40 song. If I didn't have the rat pissing all over my dishes I would've made a joke of it. But I honestly feel like torching the place.

I would feel the same too OP. Hope you sort the bastard rats out. Plenty of good advice on here. You can do it.
SickOfRats · 04/08/2021 00:06

@MorriseysGladioli

No idea. Where could I find out? I've never seen any such advertisement anywhere.
