We were on the M6 in the north yesterday when a woman with young kids in the car (the one in the front seat was far too young to be in the front) indicated for a second and pulled straight into our Lane, millimetres from the front of our car. We had to heavily brake at 70mph in heavy traffic. We were all thrown into our seatbelts in the car.

She was oblivious to us blowing the horn. Didn't seem to think that she had done anything wrong, but then started a stupid game where she would overtake, get the kids to wave at us, then slow down again and did this several times before finally pulling away.

I just don't think that she had a clue just what a stupidly dangerous thing she did. It was so close to being a bad accident that thinking about it kept me awake, while she just didn't give a shit.

Do you have a dash cam?

I would have been inclined to get the passenger to video the subsequent "games" and send it to the police.

We had someone on the M3 a couple of weeks ago when DH pulled over to get out of their way cut in front of us, slammed on brakes and drove off. He doesn't have a dash cam and it was so quick and so unexpected that we couldn't do anything. Made me feel really sick as we only just missed smashing into the back of it.

DH said he hadn't been behind us long and as we were overtaking he got over as soon as he could. It wasn't that he'd deliberately held him up.

Some people just have no brain.

Agree about getting dash cam if you haven’t got it.

A couple of years ago we (DP, DCs and I) were in the inside lane of a dual carriageway doing about 70mph and the road was clear ahead of us. A car overtook us, then stayed in the outside lane but slowed right down. DP flashed them to say you can pull in but they stayed where they were. We ended up dropping to about 40mph. I got the impression they were trying to make us undertake as I noticed the passenger had a mobile phone aimed at us over her left shoulder. So I started filming their driving on my phone and they then sped off and we’re followed by a massive line of traffic that they’d held up whilst playing this bizarre game with us.

Pulling out on you is insanely stupid and dangerous I agree.

However, you say "but then started a stupid game where she would overtake, get the kids to wave at us, then slow down again and did this several times before finally pulling away."

For them to be able to continuously overtake you, slow down and then overtake you again I'm willing to guess you were just sat in the middle lane which is equally as stupid and irritating when driving on the motorway...

the one in the front seat was far too young to be in the front

What does that even mean? There’s no age restriction on front seat passengers.

Oblivious in what way exactly? What different reaction did want/expect? How could she have indicated to you that she had done something wrong at 70 mph on a busy motorway?

ChainJane · 03/08/2021 15:26

This is why every driver should have a dashcam. Report every instance of dangerous/careless driving you see, with evidence to back it up. Do it enough times and sometimes the police will take action.

If you have an incident that is your fault you can always take the micro SD card out and say you'd forgotten to put it in today.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/08/2021 15:27

The Highway Code says the horn is to be used "only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence". It's not meant for reprimanding other road users (though I think most of us have done it).

DynamoKev · 03/08/2021 15:28

Or you could be decent and honest.

Lovelybottom · 03/08/2021 16:06

I don't understand how she kept overtaking you. Were you in the middle lane and she kept circling around?

Seriously????????????

To answer a few points.

No dash cam in this car - there is in mine, but we need to get one in this one.

We moved between Lane 2 and 3. The traffic was stupidly heavy, so inside was constantly occupied, no middle lane hogging. She would speed up whilst we were in the middle lane, overtake, then cut back in.

The horn was used to alert her to the fact that we were there. Sorry that we got annoyed at nearly been shoved into the central reservation.

We took a few photos.

It’s part of the experience of driving that other people are arseholes. If you avoid their muppetry intact you’re doing well. I understand your frustration but as long as everyone survived without injury you’re better off letting it go for your own sanity.

We take risks with other people every time we leave the house. Driving is particularly risky so of course you’re upset. But every time you go anywhere you will find yourself surrounded by arseholes. Keep your own driving as safe as possible and you will be fortunate enough to survive their arseholery.

verynearlygotme · 04/08/2021 07:59

Wise words @RiojaRose. I just hope that she realises that what she did was so dangerously stupid, and that she learns a lesson from it, but the games playing makes me think not.

She had two very young girls in the car too.
