To think salon pedicure has given me an infected toe?

I had an express pedicure on Friday. So just shape and polish. I noticed today when I went to bed my big toe felt sore. I had a look at it in the bathroom where it's bright and gave it a squeeze and some puss came out!

I'm now worried I've got some kind of infection from the pedicure. Which was actually more expensive and a bit (seemingly) fancier than my usual place!

I generally take good care of my feet and haven't had this before. Aibu in thinking it came from the pedicure? Just feels like too much of a coincidence for this to happen after the treatment.

If so should I tell the salon? Also I do have a bit of health anxiety so I don't know if its a thing I should be worried about?

Thanks

Call the GP first thing and get some antibiotics. Keep an eye on your temperature overnight and you become feverish and feel unwell, go to A&E.

I don't know how you could be sure where and where your toe got injured and then infected if you didn't notice it at the time.

Did you have broken skin when you went for the pedicure?

TigersandTeddybears · 01/08/2021 23:09

It's always possible to get an infection from any break in the skin. This could have been caused by or made worse by the pedicure, or it could have happened anyway. Please try to relax, keep an eye on your temperature, but otherwise put some antiseptic cream and a sock on and try to get some sleep. Chances are it will heal up, if not there are always antibiotics. Good luck 😊

This happened to my sister after a pedicure.

She ended up with an ingrowing toe nail that was a problem for months

Did they use any tools? Perhaps they hadn’t been sterilised between customers.

Wolframhart · 01/08/2021 23:14

Nail salon infections are not exactly common in frequency, but they are a very well documented thing.

Did they soak your feet before they filed them? Could have been an improperly washed foot spa/basin.

Is it really that serious?

Pretty gross if its a salon hygiene thing. I would get as much puss out as possible, have your toe in as hot water as you can stand to help draw it out and clean. Use a antiseptic cream and bandage once the puss is out. In the morning give your gp a call for advice and as others say if you start to feel unwell then you need to seek urgent help.

Bagamoyo1 · 01/08/2021 23:21

You’ve got an infected toe, you’ll be fine. Might need some antibiotics but antiseptic cream will probably be enough.

Very unlikely to be that serious, but its best to be extra cautious with infections.

Neondisco · 01/08/2021 23:22

So to answer questions, no broken skin I was aware of. Yes they did use tools. They were taken from a glass with a blue solution in which I assume to be some kind if disinfectant.

She did use an electric tool very briefly to sort of shape the nail and buff it.

Yes if it was a salon hygiene thing it's gross.

I had this happen to me. Spent 1/3 extra than my normal salon to go to a posh one . The woman cut too much off the skin at the side of my nail and with her tool dug around too much.
My toe swelled up but I popped into my pharmacy to explain what happened as I was worried about a serious infection and they gave me some cream and within a few days it went down.
I did go back into the salon to talk to the manager and explain what happened but she wasn't very interested

TigersandTeddybears · 01/08/2021 23:29

Have you got any antiseptic cream? Seriously, this is the kind of thing it's for and will hopefully mean you don't require antibiotics.

BebesChamber · 01/08/2021 23:34

I've had this happen to me at a nail salon as well. I'd ring the GP and tell them what's happened and they should give you some antiseptic cream - I was prescribed fucidin which I applied twice a day to the infected part and it cleared up after a few days.
