Puppy heaven or hell?

So the breeder has recommended that we let the puppy cry out, from day one in crate and apparently he will get used to it.

It's been decades since we had a puppy, I don't know if I'm doing the right thing or not. Any advice?

I wouldn’t, sure way to put your dog off the crate. Make it a nice place they want to go in to instead. Put it next to your bed the first few nights and gradually move it where you want them…. Says the person whose dog sleeps on the bed half the night 😬.

Not sure i would want to hand money over to such a monster tbh.

One sure fire way to distress your puppy and put it off the crate.

I'm not against crates by the way...but you need to do it properly by building good association with it. Feed the puppy in the crate and when it falls asleep anywhere place it in the crate. Put a t shirt you've been wearing in the crate for it to sleep on. Sleep close to the crate at first so you can shush the pup back to sleep in the night (you'll quickly learn the difference between having a bit of a whinge and proper crying for the loo) and gradually move further away. I always cover the crate too so it's cosy (although not when it's been hot weather) and play white noise or wave music.

I had a pup that we crate trained. When she cried, we waited until she stopped and then gave her praise. She cried for about a week, and then it stopped.

Our puppy book recommended either sleeping by the crate for the first couple of nights or moving the crate into your bedroom (if practical!).

It's a dog!

First night with you, then yes you put it in the crate, put a blanket over and it goes to sleep.

NB - we have a lovely 10mo puppy with no issues.

Thank you everyone for the advice. Two weeks in and we are doing so much better, as many of you suggested the crate is now in the bedroom and when he cries in the night I put him out for away.

He has settled in so well and is a little angel. I did get the book recommended, it is fab!

@shrodingersbiscuit your post make me smile. My boy now loves his crate I'm so glad I didn't leave him downstairs alone!

There is nothing like a dogs love
