I’ve been looking for an old friend on FB and am pretty certain that this is their profile, but it’s completely blank. There’s no photos, no details or anything. Does it mean their account has been deactivated?

Why do people join Facebook if they want their privacy. Confused.
Why not. It gives me option to just share with people I want to not all sumdry. Privacy. The fact that it's spying on me is a different matter😁

@QueenBee52

I don't use FB..

however a few of my friends have accounts they don't use.. there is literally nothing on it .. no friends.. only me settings.. completely blank ..

the reason..

so nobody can set up a fake account using their name for many reasons including being malicious online..

one referred to it as.. claiming ownership of their name ..

Maybe there is something to this 🤔

That's not how it works... Like how does that stop someone setting fake account
cariadlet · 30/07/2021 21:19

@NeonJellyBaby

Strange. Not sure why you wouldn’t have a photo or cover photo? But anyway I’ll send a friend request and see if she responds or not.

I don't have a photo or cover photo because I don't want anyone who decided to be nosy and look up my profile knowing which of the hundreds of people with the same combination of first and surname that I have is me. I like my privacy.

That doesn’t work on Facebook. There can be loads of people with the same name. Only own person can have the URL, but most people don’t claim that anyway.

If a restaurant etc has a Facebook page rather than a website then it's easier to access if you have a Facebook account.

When my dd was younger, I got her to add me as a friend so that I could keep an eye on what she was posting.

I can play games on different devices and use Facebook to sync my progress.

I can read posts by organisations that I'm interested in.

There are plenty of reasons to have an account even if you like your privacy and don't post anything yourself (which I don't).

Blossomtoes · 30/07/2021 21:30

@MeanderingGently

Some people have registered for Facebook but literally don't post anything, no pictures, no details, nothing. Bascally it means they don't use Facebook themselves but in order to look at anyone else's, you have to be registered, so they just do that in order to take the odd look from time to time.....
This. I have a friend who does this.

I use FB for crochet and gardening groups, together with a very small group of friends. I have no interest in being found.

TrickorTreacle · 30/07/2021 21:34

@QueenBee52

About claiming ownership to a name, what if your name was Richard Taylor or Caroline Smith? You can't really claim ownership to that can you?

However, if your name was Alastair Delahunty-Eckersall then you might have a case!

QueenBee52 · 30/07/2021 21:35

How does it claim ownership of their name?

There's no limit to how many accounts there can be in a name, there could be a million Jane Smiths. I don't undertstand the thinking there

the theory is .. they can prove that 'THIS' is there account .. correct IP address .. linked setup email .. to Police ..

I don't know how FB works but this was their thought process 🤣

QueenBee52 · 30/07/2021 21:36

their account

TheSunShinesBrighter · 30/07/2021 22:19

Totally pointless! There are at least 33 other FB users with my name - My fB profile tells me I am actually ‘Sunshine34’. It appears on my page as just ‘Sunshine’.

Police can trace it.. and know it wasn't them that set up the fake account 🌸

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/07/2021 22:28

What do they expect will happen?
Sorry but that's just plain odd.

this man was Charged because the Police were able to prove he was lying about his Twitter Acct being hacked..

By tracing the IP address..

FaceBook would be the same.. track the IP addresses to prove you did or did not set up the Fake Acct..

You can then ignore the tripe that is FaceBook assured that nobody is doing anything in the Acct Name you set up.. 🌸

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/07/2021 22:43

Bahahahhahaahahaahahahaa
"hacked". Always made me giggle

No one needs to start an accound on FB to prove their IP address. That's just odd

I don't use it.. so who knows 🤣😂

Why do people join Facebook if they want their privacy.

To keep in touch/up to date with all my extended family that live abroad (parents are immigrants). If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have an account.

notapanday · 30/07/2021 23:47

My privacy settings are at the maximum too

caughtinanet · 31/07/2021 09:19

Your example @QueenBee52 isn't what some pps are suggesting is a reason to have a Facebook.

I think everyone knows that IP addresses can be traced but they can't prove a negative You can't prove you aren't the user because a post didnt come from your normal IP address

shouldistop · 31/07/2021 09:23

@QueenBee52 how would that stop anyone making an account using their name?

RiverSkater · 31/07/2021 12:21

They've signed up for an account and done nothing with it.

User56439876 · 31/07/2021 12:28

They probably just signed up so they could look at things like places to go out or some shops and services have details on Facebook, if you don't have an account you can't use it fully and it keeps asking you to sign in

Anybody can set up an account in any name, having an account in your name doesn't stop someone else from also having a profile with the same name. I know people who have had multiple accounts in the same name over the years, when they lose the password to one they just set up a new one.
Kanaloa · 31/07/2021 12:36

It may be she doesn’t use it - I had to make a Facebook for a college group I needed to be part of, as it was important to get certain updates. I never actually added a cover photo or anything though, and when I finished I just stopped using it, so I guess if someone looked me up they would see something similar.

Manzanilla55 · 31/07/2021 12:37

Quite a few people hide their friends list. Which is odd to me. I also know somebody who has a different date of birth so he isn't a victim of fraud. His friends think it is the one on facebook!
