AIBU about the painter?

Long post but want to give all details

Basically DP and I got our first house together 18 months ago. All of it needed painted. I completely over estimated my painting ability. It took both of us 2 days to do the living room and tbh it wasn’t even that great a job.

We got a painter recommended by a friend to do our hall and kitchen. Then covid hit and we never heard back from him again despite multiple messages and calls.

In November we got another painter who was reasonably priced to do our dinning room. He also did a good job. We then recommended him to DPs dad who got him to do about £2ks worth of work to his house.

I have been in contact with the same painter since restrictions lifted this year to come and do our bedroom. I have agreed 3 dates with him and every single time he’s had an excuse why he can’t come and has to reschedule. Ive tried to be patient as with covid I can understand how isolating can ruin your business.

But last week when he messaged saying he had broken ribs and has to cancel for the third time. I initially messaged back saying get well soon and that we’d really be looking to get it done in the next fortnight. But on the Thursday he put photos up of a job a did that week. So he is obviously really crap it scheduling jobs and his excuses are a load of rubbish. I still hadn’t heard back from him so I stated making enquiries with other decorators and I was really pissed off at him.

I had a painter coming today at 4:30pm to give me quote. The guy had good reviews and could start on Monday so I was pretty sure I it was a done deal. But last night original flakey ass painter finally messaged me back after over a week saying he could do it in two weeks. I replied saying sorry we have already arranged for someone else (I didn’t have a go at him for being unreliable, I just emphasised we needed it done) he replied saying is was fine.

So painter comes today to give us quote. He wants between £500-£600. Whereas original flakey painter only want £350. DP is not happy saying I shouldn’t have chucked the OG flakey painter. Obviously I could try and get in touch with other decorators for cheaper quotes but just want it over and done with.

AIBU - I shouldn’t have chucked original flakey painter until I had a firm quote from new painter

AINBU - original flakey painter had three chances and blew us off everytime, he’s not getting the job regardless of the price

For £250 maximum do you want it done starting Monday or would you rather save up to £250 and have it started (potentially) in two weeks but maybe longer than that?

To find a good decorator at a reasonable price you're going to have to wait.

Scottishshopaholic · 28/07/2021 20:19

I want it done quicker. DP would rather wait.

I just want to avoid the same situation happening with someone else. Don’t want to wait 2-3 weeks and then that guy doesn’t show either.
