My partner and I have booked a 3 day trip to Manchester next Monday (2nd August). We've both had a difficult year for various reasons, and I've been looking forward to this one trip for months!

DH is now saying he doesn't think we should go. His reason is that the Covid rates in the Manchester area are still high (we are based in the South East), and he doesn't want to risk us having to get pinged and losing work due to isolation. I'm absolutely devastated at the prospect of us not going Sad. I'm trying to persuade him, as cases are falling and we are both double vaccinated now! I also offered to test every 2 days to make sure, before and during the trip and avoid public transport alongside wearing masks indoors etc.

The thing is, DH suffers with health anxiety alongside OCD, so it's really hard to tell whether he's being sensible and I'm letting my emotions take over my rationality, or whether he's being a bit over the top about it and the trip will be fine! To make it worse, around me seems to be going on trips and I would be heartbroken if we couldn't go.

We have 2 days to decide whether to go or not.

Please, lovely people of Mumsnet, can you offer your perspectives?

YABU - Don't go. It's not worth the risk.
YANBU - You should go.

Yep delete the app, problem solved. It's shit anyway someone can be in the next room and PING

DroopyClematis · 28/07/2021 19:46

I have health anxiety, BUT, I've managed to go for a city break , for a couple of days ( in uk.)
I'm wearing a mask, most of the time,
It's a milestone anniversary and , somehow, I want to break free.
Lots of lateral flow tests but all ok.

Freddiefox · 28/07/2021 19:49
@icecreamandcandyfloss It's not a day trip, it's 3 days. In my view, we are just as likely to be pinged in our local Tesco than in Manchester city centre!
I you’re worried about pinging delete the app and turn off your Bluetooth

MoreRainThanAnyYet · 28/07/2021 19:54

By next week, rates might be higher in the southeast than in Manchester. Who knows?

atomicnotsoblonde · 28/07/2021 19:58

You could always point out the obvious flaw in the system that you check in but not out. And that it doesn't take account of things like floors and walls or PPE. Keep the app but turn contact tracing off.

cloudjumper · 28/07/2021 20:07

I wouldn't bother deleting the app or turning off etc. If you get pinged, you get a test. Results back within 24 hours. Happened to me last weekend, all v straightforward.

CommanderBurnham · 28/07/2021 20:25

Just put in some safety measures for him. Always try and get an outside table, go to places early before it gets crowded. Masks. Take some dettol wipes etc.

If he doesn't want to go, then go with someone else, or on your own.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 28/07/2021 20:27

Would you be driving or going by train?

Is there a specific reason you want to go to Manchester in particular? A reason that can’t wait for another occasion? If it can wait then would he consider a day trip out somewhere else that he would feel more comfortable with?

SoddingWeddings · 28/07/2021 20:29

Delete the app. Go.

CosmicComfort · 28/07/2021 20:34

Well I’m In the south East and I am going to Yorkshire on Saturday for a week. Much higher rates than down here but I need a holiday. I’m frontline NHS and need a break. I know people get annoyed by that but I am on my knees, my mental and physical health is suffering and I need to get away.

I’m also double vaccinated and do regular LFT’s. I won’t be pinged because I turned it off but I will be sensible as I have been since before the first lockdown and we will be continuing to socially distance and all the rest.

I think you should go but I don’t know how you persuade someone who percieves risk very differently😢

Saoirse82 · 28/07/2021 20:48

I'm pretty cautious but I say definitely go and enjoy your trip!

FunMcCool · 28/07/2021 20:49

You could be pinged from your local supermarket and loose work… there is risk in life. You’re doubled Vaxed and not CEV? Then go and enjoy!

Mistymountain · 28/07/2021 21:12

You don't need the app. I've deleted mine now that I'm no longer using it to check in places

puppygalore · 28/07/2021 21:27

I was out in Manchester City centre this weekend and it was great! So good to do normal stuff again. The vibe was amazing. Most places we went still had plenty of outdoor seating (tho the weather has turned again so maybe not now!), staff still in masks, lots of places still doing table service, sanitiser still everywhere. Then for those who weren't as cautious you could go the bar, not wear a mask to the loo, and we danced! Actually danced to real live loud music! It was fantastic. But up until we went into that bar everyone was still very respectful of social distancing. Turn off Bluetooth and just come and have a great time.
