Terrifying spider - that's it, the house is doomed right?

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 28/07/2021 00:06

I just put a spider out of my house. The shiny, bulbous-bodied, TERRIFYING arachnid was waiting for me when I went downstairs for a glass of water. I trapped it in a cup and put it outside, all the while talking to it so I didn't further anger it. Then, having never seen a spider like it before, I did the worst thing I've ever done in my life.

I googled it.

I think I've established it was a cupboard spider: google it at your own risk. So, now I won't be sleeping for the next day or two, help me plan my next move. AIBU burning down the house? Or do I need some kind of spider-killing guard dog to protect me from further Shelob attacks? I'm not usually scared of spiders in the slightest, but this one looked darkly into my soul, and I'm certain it could've killed me on the spot if it had wanted to.

What if there's more? God, there's more isn't there. AIBU abandoning my family and moving somewhere with no spiders?
WHERE HAS NO SPIDERS?

I sprayed all crevices with protector c , around every door frame / gap and have also sealed up a lot of gaps

Absolute worse nightmare!

Oh god, what if it sneaks back in through a gap in the night? I have nothing to spray anything with but I may have to buy everything possible in the morning.

I have no idea where there are no spiders but I do think you need to torch the house.
Warn your neighbors and I'm sure they'll agree to let it spread.

I'm so sorry.

stevalnamechanger · 28/07/2021 00:13

This is why I either have to kill them ( I know I'm going to hell) or have them taken far far away !!

WorraLiberty · 28/07/2021 00:14

This is the second creatively written spider thread tonight and given it's nearly August and Aug/Sept seems to be when most spiders appear indoors, I imagine there'll be many more of them.

I get the fear of spiders and the sometimes real phobias but I'll never get why these sort of threads are rarely written by men on the internet, even though I'm sure there are many men who are scared of them too.

I feel for you OP and I'm not making light of your fear, but the giggly/girly 'burn the house down' thing does wear a bit thin and doesn't do women any favours.

At least you were able to put it out of your house and I don't know if you have kids but if you do, they'll see that by doing that there's nothing to be afraid of.

Sorry if this came across as a 'rant'. It wasn't really but I needed to get it off my chest Blush

I now have visions of it popping under my shoe 🤮 Not wishing to body shame even the most evil of spiders, but it was pretty round and fat. I think the clean up operation would've been as bad as Googling it. Which I regret. Massively.

I can assure you, I'm not giggling. Nor did I need a Big Man to save me. As DH's skin is also crawling as a result of the spider googling, I think we can chalk this one down to being a regular human response to the eight-legged thing that I really don't want living in my house, rather than 'girly'ness...

'Burning down the house'...'spider killing guard dog'...'looking darkly into your soul'?

Of course it's giggling/girlyness and as I said, it wears a bit thin and makes women look ridiculous.

But that's just my opinion. You found a spider and your dealt with it. I've no doubt between now and the end of Autumn we'll all find and deal with many more. That's life.

Spiders eat other bugs, you get rid of spiders you may end up overrun with some kinda creepy crawlie. Spiders are the safer bet

I'm not sure that particular one was the safer bet, it looked like it would've had someone's hand off. Bring me a nice normal house spider any day!

Remember they are more scared of you than you are of them, or so our parents told us

YES! Somewhere like Antarctica or the Arctic circle! Or is that what you're supposed to do when the wolves come out the walls?

At least it's not a camel spider that snuck back from Iraq in your army boots. I would leave the town over that one.

If I see a spider I have to rehome it. If it's a house / wolf spider I tend to release them nearer a neighbours house as I saw one try to run back in.

I dont mind them too much but I hate it when they pop up then disappear. Just stay in one place or bigger off. Dont keep jumping out and running around.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 28/07/2021 00:38

You’ve just put baby spider out. Spider mum and spider dad will be out to get you now. They’re obviously much bigger. Sleep well. 😛

NeonDreams · 28/07/2021 00:51

I just googled it and I rolled my eyes at how lame, I couldn't believe the fuss, they're tiny things! We've had them in our house, in our bathroom cupboards. No big deal, capture them and release outside or get a can of bug spray. Try THIS for fear! A big huntsman guarding the electricity metre box. The metre checker apparently backed away and said paraphrasing, 'fuck it, I can't read your metre, you can have free electricity for the rest of the year'.

Warning for arachnophobes.
Oh, come on, this guy isn't too bad....I promise! Take a look. :)

I'll get my coat and quickly slip out before you all come after me and throw things at me.....

Yep, I'm with the meter checker - wouldn't go near that, even with a really big cup. Though you've just reminded me that I disturbed a good few house spiders when I read the meter earlier, maybe this is payback and the cupboard spider was their best mate or something? Maybe they sent in the muscle to put me back in my place?

That's a very good point actually. Would've saved me the half an hour I spent today arguing with the energy people about our direct debit...

I’ve just had to deal with a massive fucker in the porch on top of my dog whinging at fucking 1am to go outside and chase a fox. It is fair to say I don’t like spiders so used most of a can of spider killer before thinking fuck it, took out my annoyance of the fact my DH carried on sleeping and got a big shoe.

It is now an ex-spider.

LoveFall · 28/07/2021 01:27

I'm on the eight floor of an apartment building. Meaning eight floors from the ground.

I was minding my own business in the shower when I turned to pick up my shampoo and saw an enormous spider perched on the corner of the shower enclosure.

I have no idea how it got there or why it would want to be there.

I thought I was safe after moving out of a big old drafty house that regularly harboured huge spiders that I swear chased me.

Oh well.
