Boring AIBU alert: struggling to turn on smart TV

Hi all, I’m house sitting and struggling to turn on TV - any ideas please?

The TV has been working fine for the last couple of days generally, but froze earlier on the ‘apps’ screen.

It sometimes takes a while to turn on, but I haven’t been able to properly turn it on since I switched off after the apps screen froze.

It’s a Panasonic smart TV with a Virgin box attached, and comes with 2 remotes: one for the Panasonic TV and one for the Virgin box (see pic of TV and of remotes).

Have you tried turning it off and turning it on again?

SoundBar · 27/07/2021 23:12

If you hold down the power button on the remote you can do a system reboot.

Also try turning it off at socket for 30 seconds

OhGiveUp · 27/07/2021 23:12

Try turning it off at the plug, wait a minute or two then switch plug back in. That should make it reset itself.
That's what I do when mine throws a hissy fit.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies!! Sorry for coming back to this late.

Unfortunately the TV still won’t switch on :/ I’m a bit reluctant to turn it off at the wall in case it causes an issue (especially as smart TVs have so many different wires and connections) and the wall plug is quite tricky to access behind the TV.

Do you think I should persevere with trying to switch off the TV at the wall, or just continue with trying to switch it on normally via the 2 remotes?

I’m so stumped as to why it’s not working!

I just thought of phoning Panasonic customer services just in case/messaging their chat services, but looks like they’re only open until 5. I’ll try them tomorrow though.

If you push the on button on the Panasonic remote top left) and the on button on the virgin one it may still show a blank screen.

On the top right of the Panasonic remote is the av button, if you push this you may find you can choose a different option and the virgin screen will appear

Kayjay2018 · 28/07/2021 18:54

Or try switching them both on and then the home button at the top of the virgin remote (we have this combo of tv and virgin remote)

thebeesknees123 · 28/07/2021 18:55

You could try pulling the cable out thatconnects to the plug. That would do the same as turning off at the wall

SugarBlossomFairy · 28/07/2021 18:57

Could it be the batteries in the remote need changing?

girlmom21 · 28/07/2021 19:09

You can't call them without turning it off at the wall and on again.
That's bonkers.

Hont1986 · 28/07/2021 19:28

I think forget the Virgin box altogether, the smart TV should have Freeview built in at least. Use the power button on the Panasonic remote and see if changing the input does anything

PineappleWilson · 28/07/2021 19:40

We had a frozen smart tv on holiday, couldn't get it off the tv guide at the start of the England game! Switch the tv, not virgin box, off at the wall for a good 30 seconds. Switch it back on at the wall then switch it on manually at the set, not by the remote control. I googled what to do for our tv, which was in a holiday let, so you can double check on google.

Smartiepants79 · 28/07/2021 19:43

I’d just switch he whole thing off - all devices- at the wall and give it a reboot.
That’s what I do when the smart tv and accompanying devices play up on me.

WallaceinAnderland · 28/07/2021 19:57

If you call them they will tell you to turn it off at the wall socket, leave it 30 seconds and turn it back on again. Just do that.

TwoShoess · 28/07/2021 20:23

Hi everyone, just coming back with a positive update. Turns out the remote batteries just needed changing, so all working much better now and luckily nowhere near as big an issue as I thought 😂 Big thanks to everyone for the suggestions, and thank you very much in particular to @SugarBlossomFairy for the remote batteries suggestion!!)
