There's a guy who lives on my road (a few doors away). He runs a business doing odd jobs. One of these is painting. I hired him to do a bit of outdoor painting. His quote was a lot cheaper than others. I went out abs left him to it as he didn't need access to the house and we'd discussed the job. I got home and there's paint all over the flagstones, gate hinges are slopped on etc. It's a really rubbish job. He does advertise himself as doing paint work so it's presumably not new to him.

Wwyd. I paid in advance as he lives on my road. I don't expect any money back as he was so much cheaper than the other quotes (I assumed this was because he lived so close). I don't want to damage neighbourly relations but I'm so annoyed as it all looks crap. Would it be unreasonable to say he has to come back to at least sort the paint slipped onto the flagstones? WWYD?

The cheapest quote is usually cheap for a reason!! A proper, qualified decorator would sheet up correctly before starting, and would be skilled enough not to make any errors!

I'd definitely ask for it to be rectified- and a lesson learned - don't pay up front! Make sure you are happy with the work before you hand over payment!

I’d still ask him to clean up the mess and would say you are very disappointed in the work (no other decorator has ever left a mess etc) - otherwise he will ask you to recommend him!

Never pay up front

I would pay up and not say anything for the sake of neighbourly relations. And never employ a neighbour again!
