To ask how do you brighten whites?

My washing machine hasn’t been heating the water for around a year but seemed to be washing ok still. Recently stains on the kids clothes haven’t been coming out properly and I’ve noticed the whites are not as white as they once were (kids summer tops purchased may half term so not old clothes.) I have a new machine coming tomorrow is there anyway I can brighten the tops with out ruining them further and I need to try and safe my newish white bedding as well.

Are you using powder or liquid detergent?
Powders contain bleaches and keeps whites whiter
Maybe try an in wash vanish type powder for whites as well

JacketSpud55 · 27/07/2021 12:57

Bio powder Asda own brand, I have just been and got a big 90 wash Persil bio powder from home bargains to see if that will tackle some ground in stains.

For things that are completely white such as sheets or school polo shirt you can a capful of bleach to the wash. Do not do this with anything that has any other colours as it will change colour / take the colour out.

Or try a scoop of vanish gold for whites in every wash, I do this with the school shirts and it keeps them white.

Whitening powder added in the wash and then dry in the sun. I find it works really well.

Dixiechickonhols · 27/07/2021 13:01

Vanish whitener.

luckylavender · 27/07/2021 13:04

I use Vanish and an aspirin with my whites. Works a treat.

Angel2702 · 27/07/2021 13:05

Vanish in wash and then hang in sun

PeonyTime · 27/07/2021 13:05

100%white wash, with vanish, dried in the sun. Seems to have worked with school shirts here.

Try laundry stripping. Put I cup of bio washing powder in a bucket of hot water with 1/2 cup bicarbonate of soda ( from the cleaning aisle) and 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Leave to soak at least two hours ( or until the water is cold). Wring out and wash as normal in your machine. You’ll be amazed at how filthy the water gets.

StoneofDestiny · 27/07/2021 22:48

Put whitener sheets in with the wash

AlmostSummer21 · 27/07/2021 22:53

Dr Beckman Glow White sachets. You'll never look back!

Mylittlepotofjoy · 27/07/2021 22:54

Going to give some /all of these a go thanks ladie aGrin

Bookworm20 · 27/07/2021 23:11

I use borax or bicarbonate of soda. Just about half a tea cup full in with the washing. It’s brilliant

campion · 27/07/2021 23:16

Daz powder, not capsules. Even better results if you soak the washing in it first.

AdoraBell · 27/07/2021 23:18

Vanish whitener and whitening sheets here. Drying outside in sunlight really helps too.

Nannyamc · 27/07/2021 23:20

I use bio powder and white vinegar. Just a cupful. Line drying definitely helps. 40 degree wash.

Nsky · 27/07/2021 23:24

Add eco laundry bleach bio d( use bio liquid, health food shops or online).
Keeps whiteness, a soft white.
Btw I think you need a new element

Eleoura · 27/07/2021 23:27

Drying clothes in the sun brightens them more than you'd think!

Cherrysoup · 27/07/2021 23:32

Sunlight, ridiculously effective.

Sciurus83 · 28/07/2021 03:10

Vanish whitener. For real bad ones I pre-treat with a vanish paste, put that in the sun for a day, then wash.
