Consumer rights - lost receipt

Hi, quick question!

I bought an own-brand item from a normal shop, think of Wilko/Savers. I have the card payment on my account with the exact amount I paid for it, but the receipt has somehow gotten lost.

It’s still packed, I didn’t open it, just realised the size was wrong.

If I take it back to the store without the receipt, do I have any rights? Can I return it? I’m not 100% sure.

You can probably exchange it but not get a refund.

If you simply bought the wrong item / size, you wouldn’t have any consumer rights whether you had the receipt or not, you would be reliant on the store’s policy. Without a receipt in these circumstances,, I would try for an exchange.

It depends on the store policy, sometimes they exceed consumer rights.

I've returned things for a cash refund before with only the credit card statement because if you can show them the card number, date and amount on their system, they can often find it from that even without a receipt.

Failing that, they might offer an exchange or credit note and at worst, you'll be able to stock up on toiletries, cleaning products if nothing else.
