Passport renewal

Posting it here for traffic
Was thinking about renewing my passport online and was shocked to find out that you no longer get the time added to your new passport because of Brexit and that your passport might not be valid

I would recommend anyone travelling this year or next year with only a year or so left on there passport to check and see if it’s valid when they travel to Europe
Loads of people have been caught out by this and have had to order emergency passports

Thanks OP. I had heard about this too. Annoyingly I renewed my kids' passports, thinking that our holiday this summer would go ahead (rolled over from last year). Holiday was cancelled one day after the passport renewals. So not only could I have spent that money on something else, I have wasted a year on their passports.
Ah well, that's small fry compared to what many have been through. Or as you say, the nightmare scenario of having your travel blocked at the airport Sad

The rules changed in September 2018 but there doesn't seem to have been a lot of publicity about it

I renewed my passport 2 years ago, you didn’t get the extra time added then!

Ds renewed in 2017 - months added
3 renewals in 2019 - no months added

It's not a new thing

Moonshine86 · 24/07/2021 15:48

I have read that the UK website advice is not accurate and that Spain for example only require 3 months validation

dementedpixie · 24/07/2021 16:11

You still lose any extra months from the passport if it was renewed with extra months added on I.e. you need to look at the start date and it expires on that date 10 years later so will be not be valid after that day

You can plug in your passport number and the country you are travelling to on the gov.uk website and it will tell you the last day for travel

It's been like that for a number of years. Martin Lewis always spoke about it when he was on GMB or This Morning.
