Picked up by tabloids

Is it ok for daily mirror journalists to trawl
Mumsnet and then turn a popular thread into an 'article'

Is this journalism?

No it’s not journalism. It’s ‘ok’ in the sense that it’s a public forum so there are no legal issues with using threads.
It’s been happening for years.

FatOaf · 24/07/2021 09:04

They're not journalists. They're clickbait-generators. The Mirror is not going to employ more than a couple of actual journalists.

Hopdathelf · 24/07/2021 09:47

Oh good, this again. We haven’t had one of these threads for all of two days.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 24/07/2021 09:48

Its the copy and paste monkeys. They also do this with reddit.

Lazy as fuck, but cheap.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 24/07/2021 09:57

It's now got to the point where DH will read me out something from a certain tabloid's website, and ask me how many days ago it featured on Mumsnet or Reddit ...

bananaJamas · 24/07/2021 10:03

Some of it is not even worth repeating

It's fine. Threads on here are also picked up by This Morning and Loose Women.
It's not journalism, but not much in the tabloids is TBF.

It's a good warning though. If you don't want it posted in the wider media don't put it on a huge parenting website for all to see.

MySecretHistory · 24/07/2021 10:15

They often don’t pick them up but start them

There was one a few days ago- beg it will end up in a paper

Sparklingbrook · 24/07/2021 10:17

When Penis Beaker (what a load of made up cobblers that was ) went viral it brought loads of new users to the site, so it's actually beneficial to MN.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 24/07/2021 10:18

Some threads on here are picked up by my local radio stafion. It's a risk you take when posting.

ilovesooty · 24/07/2021 10:21

I don't know why some people haven't got their heads round the concept of if you don't want it picked up, don't post it. That applies when you reply to contentious threads as well. It isn't a cosy sitting room with half a dozen trusted friends.

Hankunamatata · 24/07/2021 10:21

Seen a few pop up on my feed from the sun, daily star etc BUT they dont credit mumsnet

Sparklingbrook · 24/07/2021 10:31

This from Wiki (which isn't particularly reliable but can't see why this would be false)

In 2018, Mumsnet had 1.3 billion page views from 119 million unique users

Yes, cosy chat with a few friends in your sitting room it ain't.

ThatLibraryMiss · 24/07/2021 11:40

That applies when you reply to contentious threads

And to the ones in which posters fall over each other to tell the world about their genitals, underwear, toilet habits and sexual activities. If you (you generally) feel the need to share personal information, just pause and imagine Herbert the Pervert reading your post.

VladmirsPoutine · 24/07/2021 11:45

It's a public forum. If you aren't being sold something then YOU are the product. I don't understand why this very simple logic evades so many who then get in a spin when a thread gets picked up by shock horror... other public platforms be they magazines, newspapers or crappy daytime TV.

ScreamingMeMe · 24/07/2021 11:45

It's not unique to Mumsnet or The Daily Mail. Lots of other trashy publications like Buzzfeed and their ilk trawl social media and places like Reddit for their "news".

I think there's a wider point here about clickbait and the near death of actual journalism.

Geamhradh · 24/07/2021 11:48

They've been doing it for two decades give or take.
As most of the threads they pick up on are a load of bollocks anyway who really cares?
Aside from the dumbing down following PB of course.

Bluntness100 · 24/07/2021 11:48

It’s actually astonishing how many people don’t understand the scale of this site, it’s millions and millions of people, I think 16 million members alone you’re posting to. People seem to think it’s some sort of safe space private members site, god knows why, it’s a hugely popular busy site, even if people don’t respond or post, they are reading. Putting it in the media might escalate that, but once you’ve put it out there to sixteen million people, it’s done.

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/07/2021 12:02

Almost everything I see on a tabloid website I have seen first from Twitter, TikTok and Mumsnet

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 24/07/2021 12:04

One newspaper based their whole article on my post. My words verbatim. I asked them for payment as I'd written the article. No reply.
